Job summary

Local Progress is seeking a Communications Manager to develop and execute comprehensive communications campaigns across digital and media channels. The role focuses on amplifying the narrative of progressive local governance and supporting school board work in states like California.

The position reports to the Deputy Communications Director and is remote-based in the U.S., with travel up to six days per month and a requirement to reside in California.

Qualifications

• Must reside in California.
• 6 years of experience with at least 3 years of communications experience in advocacy, political, or public policy-related fields.
• Experience developing and executing communications plans with strong experience in both media relations and social media management.
• Ability to keep multiple projects on track, drive projects independently, anticipate obstacles and communicate progress with a remote team.
• Attention to detail with the ability to convey and translate complex information for diverse audiences.
• Creative and proactive in identifying and executing communications opportunities.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with Local Progress members, partners, and staff.
• Commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and interest in local policy, politics, and government.
• Proficiency with EveryAction, Wordpress and/or other CMS.
• Proficiency with Muck Rack or other media relations platforms.
• Spanish language fluency and experience with Spanish language media.
• Local justice issue experience including education and school boards.
• Experience leading state communications campaigns.

Responsibilities

• Support and lead key aspects of day-to-day communications, including emails, media inquiries, brand development, and website/social media management.
• Collaborate with national and state staff to develop and execute communications strategies for campaigns and projects; draft press materials and social copy; create graphics.
• Provide direct support to LP members with strategic communications guidance and media prep.
• Work with the entire LP team to disseminate news, organize events, reports, and policy briefs.
• Grow press lists and cultivate relationships with national and local reporters.
