Job summary

Mortenson Construction seeks a Category Manager I to develop and manage sourcing strategies for consumables, indirect materials, and services, optimizing cost, quality and delivery while strengthening supplier relationships. You will lead the consumables purchasing team and ensure timely, cost-effective delivery to meet project timelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in business, supply chain management, construction management or equivalent.
• Minimum 6 years in strategically managing and expanding categories and suppliers in indirect materials & services.
• Current driver's license.
• Strong understanding of consumables & indirect materials purchasing processes.
• Strong business acumen with skills in strategic thinking and negotiation.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to lead people with experience in hiring, coaching, and mentoring a team.
• Ability to influence without authority.
• Active listening skills and openness to diverse input and feedback.
• Knowledge of construction processes, equipment and materials, purchasing processes and procedures.
• Travel up to 30%.

Responsibilities

• Develop, execute, and implement category strategies by engaging stakeholders, analyzing spend and market dynamics, defining sourcing plans, and updating strategies as business conditions evolve.
• Identify, prioritize, and implement scalable consignment or EBOS opportunities across EBOS categories and projects.
• Lead supplier relationship management through executive level engagement, business reviews, performance monitoring, and supporting operational needs such as expedites.
• Drive category financial performance by setting financial strategies, developing pricing approaches, and leading monthly and annual financial reviews with metrics, forecasts, and project updates.
• Achieve material cost reductions by leading contract negotiations, defining negotiation strategies and TCO models, monitoring market drivers, and managing commodity inflation forecasting and mitigation.
• Responsible for defining negotiations strategy including supplier profiles, commercial negotiations targets, defining switching costs, and building Total Cost of Ownership.
• Assess potential opportunities for categories including spend segmentation, category maturity, cost drivers, and supply market analysis.
• Build strong cross functional relationships by collaborating effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
• Closely monitor market drivers affecting the category including raw material pricing and availability, supplier capacity, industry disruptions and new products.
• Provide leadership and coaching by modeling expected behaviors, offering constructive feedback, managing performance, and supporting additional responsibilities as assigned.
