Job summary

Stowe Family YMCA in Belmont, NC is seeking a part-time Water Exercise Instructor to lead aquatic exercise classes. You will plan lessons, ensure safety, and create a welcoming environment for all participants in accordance with YMCA policies.

Responsibilities include instructing classes, maintaining attendance, coordinating with staff, and upholding risk management and emergency procedures. CPR/First Aid or Red Cross Lifeguard certification preferred. Must be at least 18.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Preferred experience teaching Aquatic Exercise.
  • Must have a nationally recognized water certification or group exercise certification.
  • RedCross Lifeguard certification provided by YMCA upon hiring.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people.

  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with participants in the class; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and, as appropriate, refers participants to other programs.
  • Maintains record of attendance as required.
  • Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment; reports damaged equipment.
  • The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training before working with consumers and on an annual basis.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Maintain vigilance in supervising aquatic environments, including locker rooms, restrooms, and storage areas. Consistently follow safety procedures during instruction, transitions, and emergencies.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Water Exercise Instructors provide direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in aquatics group exercise classes. Instructors aid in providing excellent service to members of all ages in a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment that promotes positive program experiences based on the specifically designed curriculum for skill development in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fulfillment of specific hiring standards and completion of YMCA program‑specific training. Required certifications provided by the YMCA upon hiring: RedCross Lifeguard certification.
