Job description

Job Title: Sr. Stormwater Engineer

Location: Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Duration: 8 Months+ with high possible extension

Pay Rate: $115.07 Hr on W2

Position Description
  • The Senior Stormwater Engineer classification primarily performs professional engineering review of private development and city infrastructure projects for stormwater related issues.
  • The position also participates in management of drainage and flood control studies, manages the City’s floodplains, and provides technical assistance to other city departments.
Skills Required
  • Reviews and provides comments on plans, reports and other documentation for preliminary and final development and infrastructure proposals and determines the nature and extent of impacts to City facilities and private lands.
  • Represents the City in meetings with engineers, developers, owners and architects to communicate and resolve issues relating to the review of development proposals and plans.
  • Implements Federal, State and City Code requirements and other guidance in the review of development proposals and plans.
  • Acts as technical reviewer on Area Drainage Master Studies/Plans, drainage and flood control studies, design concept reports and capital improvement projects and participates in related project meetings.
  • Prepares components of the stormwater capital improvement plan.
  • Reviews complex stormwater management systems for proposed new development.
  • Conducts and implements flood plain management principles and practices in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency regulations and City’s Stormwater and Floodplain Management Ordinance.
  • Provides guidance in evaluating and addressing drainage code violations and complaints.
  • Performs technical review of hydrologic models such as HEC-1 and HEC-HMS.
  • Performs technical review of hydraulic models such as HEC-2 and HEC-RAS.
  • Performs technical review of scour and sediment transport evaluations and models; serves as a primary point of contact for stormwater and drainage issues throughout the City.
  • Works on the preparation of public outreach or public education materials relating to stormwater management.
  • Coordinates with other city staff to resolve technical and complex project issues.
  • Prepares intergovernmental agreements with various agencies such as the Maricopa County Flood Control District.
  • Participates in the selection and management of consultant teams, including day‑to‑day direction on activities and reviews and approves progress payments.
  • Prepares work plans, budgets, schedules, and monthly reports.
Experience Required
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in the design, review or management of work related to stormwater, drainage, and hydraulics/hydrology.
  • An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • An Arizona Professional Engineer License is required and may be obtained through reciprocity for out-of-state registrants.
  • Certification of a Certified Floodplain Manager credential from the Association of Floodplain Managers is required within 18 months of hire.
Additional Information
  • The City’s Sr. Stormwater Engineer is in the military and has been deployed overseas for the next 10‑12 months.
