Job summary

The City of Durham's Environmental & Street Services Department is seeking a communications-focused specialist to advance stormwater pollution prevention education across city departments, local businesses, and residents.

The role involves editing reports, presenting at EAB meetings, coordinating stakeholder workgroups, and maintaining stormwater information on the city website, plus creating social media content to raise awareness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field.
• Two years of experience in communications strategy design and implementation, science communication, or environmental education.
• NC Class C Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record when assigned to Water Quality.

Responsibilities

• Independently prepares and delivers stormwater pollution prevention training to city departments.
• Prepares materials for training local businesses, including automotive and restaurants.
• Edits technical reports and memoranda for consistent language.
• Attends Environmental Affairs Board meetings and shares notes; presents information.
• Facilitates stakeholder workgroups to gather perspectives on stormwater programs.
• Curates stormwater permit information on the city website and annual report.
• Prepares social media posts educating residents about stormwater and water quality.
• Collects and summarizes program information for the annual report.
