Salt Lake County is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance on highways, drainage structures, and streams. Responsibilities

Operates a variety of small hand tools and equipment.
Maintains and repairs tools/equipment and stores securely.
Sets up traffic warning signs, cones, barricades, and flags traffic.
Maintains/repairs storm drains, irrigation systems, and other drainage structures.
Trims trees and bushes; hauls away debris.
Adheres to OSHA and MUTCD safety rules.
Remains capable of operating multiple heavy/light trucks and snow removal equipment.
Develops cooperative relationships with staff and public.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair work on highways, drainage structures, and streams. Assists with snow removal and minimal landscaping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle. Must possess a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire OR obtain a Class B CDL within sixty (60) days of hire date to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle. Must possess a current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card at the time of hire OR obtain within thirty (30) days of hire date. Must attend flagging training and certify within sixty (60) days of hire date and recertify every two (2) years. Must attend a Defensive Driving course within the first two (2) weeks of hire. Must attend and be forklift certified within four (4) months (120 days) of hire. Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Operates a variety of small hand tools and equipment.
Maintains tools and equipment by keeping them clean, repaired, and stored securely when not in use; performs minor repairs.
Sets up traffic warning signs, traffic cones, barricades, and flags traffic.
Maintains/ repairs storm drains, Irrigation systems, and other drainage structures by clearing debris and excess sediment.
Trims trees and bushes; hauls away debris.
Complies with OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations.
May operate Bobtail truck/10-wheel dump truck.
Removes snow from roadways.
Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, representatives from other departments and organizations, and the public.
Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and equipment necessary to perform road/ storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
Equipment operating principles and procedures
Hazards and safety precautions common to road/storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
Pertinent OSHA and/or MUTCD safety rules and regulations
Salt Lake County geography
Blue stakes

Skills and Abilities to:

Operate a light truck (pick-up) or sedan, bob-tail truck, 10-wheeler dump truck, sander unit, snow-plow unit, Vactor truck, and other heavy/ light equipment
Use standard and specialized tools and materials common to several trades
Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions
Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions
Prepare daily records of work performed both on paper and in various computer programs
Keep in compliance with and follow standard practices and procedures common to road/storm drain construction, landscaping, maintenance/repair, and snow removal work
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments/divisions, and the public
Maintain/repair storm drains, irrigation systems, and other drainage structures by clearing debris and excess sediment
Trim trees and bushes; hauls away debris
Installation/repair of storm drain systems
Clean storm drain system with a combination sewer cleaning truck
Snow removal
Locate and map storm drains

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

These positions require extensive physical labor (approximately 90% of the time) including, but not restricted to: lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, standing, walking on uneven ground, and climbing ladders. Applicants must be able to carry objects over 50 lbs. (occasionally up to 100 lbs. with some assistance). This position also involves almost constant exposure to extreme weather conditions, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and loud noises. Work is occasionally performed in confined spaces and at heights up to three (3) stories. Employees are exposed to high volumes of traffic while performing road maintenance work.
