Job summary

Salt Lake County is seeking an entry-level technician to maintain, repair, and install traffic signals, school flashers, and street light poles. The role requires CDL or CDL within 30 days, utility locator certification within 6 months, and drug testing compliance.

The candidate will locate utilities, set up warning signs and barricades, assist with conduit installation, and operate a range of light and heavy equipment.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of closely related experience.
  • Must possess a current Utility Locator Certification within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must attain flagging and forklift certifications within three (3) months of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of hire OR obtain the Class B CDL within thirty (30) days of hire date to operate a Salt Lake County vehicle.
  • Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire.
  • Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic signals, school flashers, and street light poles.
  • Locates utilities (blue staking).
  • Sets up warning signs, traffic cones, and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Assists in installing conduits and pulling wire.
  • Assists in operating standard electrical tools.
  • Stocks trucks with necessary electrical parts.
  • Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment.
  • Cleans, stores, and performs routine and emergency repairs on assigned tools and equipment; reports mechanical problems to shop personnel.
  • Assists with road maintenance, sidewalk repair, landscaping, flood control/draining, and snow removal.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the general public.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with citizens, County agencies, and co-workers.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of entry-level and semi-skilled work dealing with the maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signals, school flashers, and street light poles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Six (6) months of closely related experience.

Must possess a current Utility Locator Certification within six (6) months of hire date.

Must attain flagging and forklift certifications within three (3) months of hire date.

  • Light and heavy equipment operating practices
  • Hazards and safety precautions common to electrical, highway, construction, landscape, flood control/drainage, and snow removal
  • Applicable standard and emergency operating procedures
  • Basic traffic signal and street light construction and maintenance

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment
  • Perform daily maintenance and minor repairs
  • Operate equipment in adverse weather conditions
  • Use the computer and software
  • Mix and use epoxy chemicals
  • Use common and specialized tools and materials of the electrical trades

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires driving, standing, squatting, and sitting in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet; and manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. Requires bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 60 lbs. on an intermittent basis. Constant exposure to traffic hazards, weather, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, fumes, grease, and unsanitary conditions.
