Job Summary

Job Title: Assistant Store Manager

FLSA Status: Salary/Exempt

Reports To: Store Manager

Responsible for assisting the Store Manager in managing the total store operation by adapting and shifting focus based on daily business needs. This role supports Center Store, Fresh department teams, and Front-End team to assist with cashiering functions, and helps maintain store standards. Responsible for maximizing sales and providing excellent customer service, merchandising product, maintaining appropriate stock levels, developing, and training store associates, and achieving productivity goals. This role will require stepping in where needed, resolving guest concerns and supporting store opening and closing procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead by example to maintain our culture by providing a great environment and experience for all guests and associates on a daily basis.
  • Assists by training and motivating associates as well as recommending and/or delivering disciplinary actions when required to correct behavior that involves policy violations or actions that have an adverse effect on store operating performance.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all associates adhere to company procedures for checking ID requirements in all applicable transactions including sales of alcoholic beverages and tobacco laws.
  • Answers questions and provides guidance to guests and associates
  • Communicates and works cooperatively with Store Manager, Department Managers, and associates to ensure all department standards are being met in the store and delivering on our priorities of helpfulness and in-stock.
  • Observes sales floor and back stock conditions; takes action to correct areas of opportunity
  • Addresses guest concerns and resolves issues when a guest is not satisfied with the service or product received
  • Assists all department associates with daily responsibilities while leading by example.
  • Assist and monitor budget and labor projections and to make daily adjustments as necessary.
  • Adhere and oversee all Sanitation standards and guidelines set by local and company standards.
  • Properly manage inventory to achieve acceptable unallocated/shrink figures.
  • Supervise the merchandising and maintenance of all displays, including all specialty department floor displays.
  • Responsible for maintaining all safety programs to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Regular, timely attendance in compliance with the work schedule, and adequate notice to find a replacement for occasional absences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five to seven years Grocery experience preferred with two years in a key leadership position.
  • Previous experience managing a department preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of the retail food business, thorough knowledge of perishable department operations, merchandising skills, must be able to make timely and effective decisions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with customers and all associates.
  • Good organizational skills, with a full understanding of operation systems and cash office procedures.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to handle a diverse crew in a stressful environment.
  • Thorough understanding of all safety requirements and company safety policies.
  • Must possess the ability to apply on-the-job safety training to recognize and react to possible safety hazards on store premises. Also requires proper training and knowledgeof the following equipment/procedures: hand jack,bailer,forklift,cutter, proper lifting techniques,proper scanning technique,hand truck,trash compactor.
  • Must be available to work 1-3 evenings each week (typically 1pm-9pm)
  • Schedule will vary to include mornings, afternoons, and evening shifts

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands and work environment described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • The employee must possess the ability to stand in place for long periods of time; walk in the store; bend, stoop and kneel regularly. Requires fine finger and broad manual dexterity, and eye-hand-foot coordination in order to operate equipment.
  • This position requires the employee have the ability to have full range of upper body motion in order to occasionally lift stock. Requires the ability to perform repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must possess functional sensory abilities in order to visually monitor the store, create attractive displays, and to operate equipment.
  • Working conditions consist primarily of a temperature-controlled environment. The ability to work outside checking store property, in walk-in coolers or freezers for short periods of time is necessary.
  • This job involves exposure to changing temperature and humidity (i.e. freezers, coolers and warehouse). Chemical cleaning agents, irritating or competing noises or other irritating substances, and working in areas with wet and slippery floors.

WORK SCHEDULE

The Assistant Store Manager position is a salaried position. The hours of this position are based upon the needs of the business.
