Job description

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Woodland Market Store Director is the senior leader in the store, responsible for managing all operations, staff, and financial performance, including achieving store operating income targets. The Store Director sets the standard for a premium, hospitality-driven shopping experience: curating exceptional product presentation, building a guest-first culture, coaching a high-performing team with care, and growing sales and profitability.

Hospitality & Guest Experience
  • Set and uphold a standard of genuine hospitality in which every guest is greeted warmly, served attentively, and leaves feeling genuinely cared for.
  • Lead by example on the sales floor: greet guests, know regulars by name, and model a warm, attentive hospitality standard for the entire team.
  • Address guest concerns and other issues promptly and graciously, empowering team members to make it right on the spot.
  • Champion personalized services such as special orders, catering, product sampling, tastings, and in-store events.
  • Build Woodland Market's presence in the community through local marketing, events, partnerships, and donations.
Retail Execution & Store Operations
  • Maintain premium standards of freshness, quality, and presentation across all departments, including produce, meat and seafood, bakery, prepared foods, specialty cheese, and wine and beer.
  • Partner with department heads and buyers on product selection, local and artisan vendor relationships, seasonal programs, and promotions.
  • Ensure flawless merchandising execution, including pricing and signage accuracy, promotional execution, and compelling displays.
  • Shop competitors regularly to stay current on assortment, pricing, and service trends, and act on what is learned.
  • Responsible for the overall condition of the store. This includes appearance, cleanliness, food safety, and any workplace safety issues.
  • Oversee facilities and equipment, including refrigeration and maintenance, and lead the store's response to emergencies.
  • Protect company assets through loss prevention, cash control, and consistent opening and closing procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, health department, alcohol licensing, and company policies, and keep the store inspection-ready at all times.
Financial Performance
  • Own the store P&L and deliver store operating income targets: drive sales growth, manage margins, control shrink, and manage labor and operating expenses.
  • Oversee inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and regular counts.
  • Build the annual store budget and prepare capital expenditure requests.
  • Write and/or approve weekly store labor schedules and meet labor targets.
  • Maintain a solid understanding of expenditures by department on a weekly, period-by-period, and yearly basis. COGS should be reflective of sales relative to the department during the same time periods.
  • Review weekly sales and labor information to ensure that the store is tracking each of the 13 accounting periods and ultimately a yearly total.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Recruit, hire, coach, mentor, motivate, and train staff, and develop a bench of future department and store leaders.
  • Lead with deep care and courageous coaching: invest in each team member's growth, give direct and timely feedback, and hold the team to a high standard.
  • Handle the hard parts of leadership with care and courage: conduct performance reviews, deliver corrective action, and manage terminations in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Approve payroll and ensure compliance with California wage-and-hour, meal, and rest break requirements.
  • Ensure manager-on-duty (MOD) coverage across all operating hours.
  • Ensure that a proactive approach is taken to workplace safety and employee wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources regarding staffing needs, employee relations issues, morale, motivation, incentives, etc.
  • Work closely with the CEO and Senior Management to ensure that company initiatives for the store are accomplished, and provide regular reporting on store performance.
  • Effectively communicate changes or directives to department heads and employees, acting as local change agent when necessary.
Skills
  • Hospitality mindset with an uncompromising commitment to an exceptional guest experience
  • Genuine passion for food, with knowledge of specialty, natural, organic, and artisan products
  • Excellent leadership qualities and the ability to build and inspire a high-performing team
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
