Position Summary
Responsible for washing/sanitizing dishes, glassware, flatware, cooking pots/utensils and related food service equipment. Helps prepare and deliver plated food for banquets/events. Cleans kitchen areas and equipment. Pays $17.00 per hour.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Sort soiled ware and prepare it for cleaning.
- Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots and pans according to hotel standards of cleanliness.
- Use appropriate dishwashing machines or other kitchen cleaning equipment.
- Visually inspect all items to assure cleanliness.
- Clean and sanitize walls, floors, counter surfaces, and cutting boards continuously or as assigned.
- Place clean dishes, utensils and cooking equipment in appropriate storage.
- Stock supplies such as food or utensils in serving stations, cupboards, refrigerators, or salad bars.
- Dispose of kitchen substances (grease) and chemicals properly.
- Transport garbage containers to dump sites and adhere to recycling regulations.
- Sort and remove trash, placing it in designated pickup areas.
- Empty and clean trashcans.
- Follow food handling, sanitation and health department guidelines.
- Wear non‑slip, oil‑resistant shoes.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and report safety issues immediately.
- Follow OSHA personal protective equipment (PPE) laws; receive training on proper use and care of PPE.
- Report defective, damaged or lost PPE or equipment.
- Maintain compliance with the hotel’s Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) program and familiarize with current MSDS.
- Report to work on time on a regular basis.
- May perform food preparation during staffing shortages or peak periods.
- Help prepare and deliver plated food for banquets.
- Accept and sign deliveries, ensuring items are accounted for and stored correctly.
- Keep the dish machine cleaned and filled with water per hotel standards.
- Operate burnishing machine to ensure proper finish on silverware; detarnish and polish silver.
- Communicate shortages of china, glass, silver, chemicals, cleaning supplies, service equipment or fuel to management.
- Report breakage to the supervisor.
- Ensure the work area is kept clean and organized.
Qualifications
- No related experience or training required; previous stewarding experience desired.
- Ability to perform basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Follow detailed written or oral instructions.
- Handle problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Communicate, read, write and understand English to follow instructions and safety rules.
- Complete required training as scheduled.
- Learn proper use of various types of equipment and cleaning materials used in cleaning assigned areas.
- Have a valid current Food Handlers Card or willingness to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
- Work varying schedules to reflect business needs; may work holidays, weekends and alternate shifts.
- Maintain a clean appearance and professional demeanor.

- Stand and walk for sustained periods of time; work at a quick pace.
- Grasp objects such as cookware, knives, plates and glassware.
- Feel temperature of hot dishes and cookware; extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction while serving.
- Stoop, kneel and crouch regularly.
- Talk occasionally when communicating with stewarding and kitchen staff; hear voices while interacting with staff.
- Work in environments with many aromas, smells and loud noise.
- Balance required to prevent falling when walking, standing, moving or carrying cookware, plate ware and food items.
- Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, or 10 pounds constantly to move items such as cookware, dishes and supplies.
- Visual acuity needed to determine cleanliness, accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work areas.
- Subject to extreme heat up to 100 degrees while moving around kitchen and dishwashing areas.
- Subject to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, equipment, sharp objects, cleaning chemicals, slick floors, hot stoves, cookware and glassware; occasional exposure to fumes, odors or dusts.
- Operate in crowded or narrow aisles, passageways or work areas in the kitchen and cleaning areas.
