The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instrumentation and equipment. The role is critical for infection prevention, following guidelines from AAMI, AORN, CDC, SGNA, and hospital policies to ensure patient and staff safety.
Key qualities include a strong work ethic, organization, teamwork, independence, excellent communication, quick task performance, and attention to detail. The technician will have extensive contact with people and interruptions, requiring good problem-solving skills under high-volume, deadline-driven environments.
The physical environment may involve high-pressure steam, mechanical, chemical, electrical, bio-waste, and bodily fluids, with conditions like noise, odors, and temperature variations. The technician may be assigned to the main Sterile Processing Department or the Ambulatory Surgery ENDO unit.
Training/competency in attending to the needs of patients of all ages is required as applicable.
