Job summary

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to perform decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical trays and equipment under direct supervision. The role requires basic computer skills and strong communication, with a focus on preventing cross-contamination and following safety policies.

No experience is required; graduation from a sterile processing or surgical technology program is preferred, with a CRCST/CBSPD

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• CRCST/CBSPD certification within 18 months required/anticipated.
• Graduate of a Sterile Processing and/or Surgical Technology program is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates decontamination, inspection, and cleaning of surgical instruments, flexible scopes, and respiratory devices per manufacturer's instructions.
• Assembles accurate/complete surgical trays and case carts for urgent, emergent, and elective cases.
• Uses sterile processing chemicals per instructions and dons/doffs PPE as required.
• Maintains department sterilization records and participates in sterilizer testing and monitoring.
• Supports operating room functions in sterile core and fosters cross-department collaboration.
• Follows safety instructions, policies, and regulatory requirements and attends staff meetings.

Job Description

Performs a variety of duties in relationship to decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization, and distribution of trays/sets, equipment, and supplies with direct supervision. Performs routine cleaning such as wiping down tables. Participates in distribution of operating room supplies and trays/sets. Performs all tasks as assigned in a neat and organized manner. Maintains and prevents cross contamination by observing dress codes, environmental policies, and traffic control.

• 6 months relevant clinical experience

Certification Summary

Job Responsibilities

• Uses sterile processing chemicals according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
• Dons and doffs appropriate personal protection equipment.
• Assembles accurate/complete surgical trays.
• Participates with and monitors process of building accurate and timely assembling of case carts for emergent/urgent and elective cases.
• Assists with maintaining department sterilization records.
• Participates in sterilizer test parameters monitoring, e.g., bowie dick test, biologicals, and other forms of sterilization testing and responds appropriately to sterilization that does not pass.
• Supports operating room functions in sterile core.
• Fosters positive working relationships across departments and campuses with patients, physicians, families, visitors, coworkers, and vendors.
• Complies with all applicable regulations, standards, and recommendations.
• Follows hospital and departmental safety instructions, policies, and procedures.
• Attends 75% of staff meetings/communication and job-related educational opportunities.
