Job Overview
The role of the Sterile Processing Tech III is to deliver onsite training for the Sterile Processing Department while working with the Sterile Processing Educator. The Tech III communicates the educator’s needs, provides up-to-date training, and supports education within the team. Additionally, the Tech III performs core sterile processing duties and collaborates with the department to support personnel, partners, and customers.
This position requires a strong sterile processing background, interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team environment, and the ability to work independently to deliver solutions on time. Strong cross‑departmental communication is necessary.
Responsibilities
Education of New Team Members
- Conduct onsite education utilization assessments.
- Maintain and uphold education modules, guidelines, and policies set by the Educator and Christ Hospital.
- Conduct onsite assessments for onboarding and new team members.
- Participate in creation of learning modules, quick reference guides, facilitated sessions, and training templates.
- Gain knowledge of equipment, products, and systems related to sterile processing.
- Maintain knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of trays, instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of governing standards related to sterile processing.
Assembles Instrument Trays and Packs
- Unload instruments from washer sterilizers and distribute to designated areas.
- Use SPM to assemble trays according to standards and procedures.
- Follow manufacturer’s IFUs to assure proper reassembly.
- Assemble trays and packs using written instructions and protocols.
- Check for sharpness and proper functioning of instruments.
- Recognize and memorize a variety of instrumentation.
- Apply sterilization wrappers and rigid containers to maintain integrity.
- Assemble loaner trays based on the Casechek vendor tray tracking system.
- Use heat sealer on peel packs.
- Properly label each item.
Operates Sterilizers, Documents Loads, and Returns Stock to Appropriate Areas
- Perform sterilization processes using Steam and Sterrad sterilizers.
- Use SPM to build sterilizer loads.
- Verify trays, packs, and basins on carts meet protocols.
- Monitor and document biological and chemical indicator results.
- Handle and restock sterile items in the storage area with clear labeling.
- Continuously monitor equipment function.
Builds Case Carts
- Obtain surgical reference lists from Epic to build case carts.
- Collect items from sterile storage shelves.
- Locate trays in storage for case carts using SPM.
Performs Equipment Collection/Decontamination
- Disassemble, clean, and disinfect equipment per manufacturer IFU.
- Transport dirty equipment to the decontamination room and deliver clean equipment as needed.
- Use universal precautions in the decontamination area.
- Inspect equipment for wear or disrepair and coordinate reporting.
- Track equipment using SPM.
Other
- Assist with operations on assigned shifts, prioritizing requests and OR needs.
- Support staff throughout the shift to ensure tasks and OR requests are satisfied.
- Ensure effective communication between shifts.
- Perform quality control checks; trend and analyze concerns.
- Assemble instrument sets and trays following manufacturer instructions.
- Document and maintain sterilization records.
- Participate in departmental quality initiatives and in‑service training.
- Assume additional responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills
- Current professional certification with HSPA or CBSPD.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a Sterile Processing department (preferred).
- Experience implementing systems in healthcare environments (preferred).
- Knowledge of regulatory bodies impacting Sterile Processing and Operating Rooms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, computer systems, and software products.
Licences, Registrations & Certifications
- Required: High School Diploma and HSPA or CBSPD certification.
- Preferred: Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS).
