Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 5 years’ experience as a sterile processing tech preferred.
  • Must possess Central Service Processing Technician Certification or Certified Operating Room Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others.
  • Orders and restocks sterilization supplies.
  • Collects dirty equipment and instruments.
  • Sorts, loads, unloads and decontaminates equipment and instruments per procedures.
  • Cleans, repackages, and sterilizes instruments per procedures.
  • Assembles trays, basin sets, packages, instruments and equipment and prepares items for sterilization.
  • Decontaminates, restocks and assembles case carts and surgical trays.
  • Ensures specialty carts are stocked and ready for immediate use.
  • Performs quality control to assure sterilization equipment and instruments function properly.
  • Inspects equipment, instruments, and packaging for cleanliness and defects.
  • Documents sterilization cycles and labels products with sterilization date.
  • Serves as a resource and preceptor for new staff.

Summary

The Sterile Processing Tech III defines the technician who develops refined expertise and is highly proficient in their specialty. The Sterile Processing Tech III prepares, tracks, and sterilizes equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepares sterile trays and supplies for all areas of the hospital. Responsible for decontamination, assembly of packs, operation of steam, low temperature, and other forms of sterilization. Perform multiple tasks assist in the daily operation of all units as well as being responsible for customer service.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 5 years’ experience as a sterile processing tech preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain Central Service Processing Technician Certification or Certified Operating Room Technician by an accredited body
Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly.
  • Inspect equipment, instruments, and packaging for cleanliness, defects and/or malfunctions.
  • Document sterilization cycle.
  • Labels products with sterilization date.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the OR department
  • Checks outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilize processing area
  • Maintains and updates the instruments tray inventory list following policies and procedures.
  • Serves as a resource person in the department by training and developing new staff
  • Serves as a preceptor for new staff
  • Completes all additional assigned educational requirements
  • Ambassador to a specific service specialty in the OR (Ortho, OB-Gyn, Neuro, ENT, Plastics, Gen, Trauma, Pedi, Uro, ect)
  • Responsible for instrument availability at all times for that specialty
  • Provides at least 1 educational inservice for the staff regarding the designated specialty
  • Collaborates biweekly or as needed with the specialty team regarding SPD/OR needs
  • Ensures that instruments for the specialty are maintained
  • Other duties as assigned

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
  • Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures or quantities
  • Knowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital procedures
  • Knowledge of sterilization procedures of various equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments
  • Skill in using sterilization equipment and instruments
  • Skill in arranging instruments on surgical trays
  • Skill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasks
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others
