Job summary

University of Southern California is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician II to decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize reusable surgical instrumentation. You will manage sterilization equipment, maintain documentation, and coordinate with OR and ancillary departments to ensure efficient workflow.

The role requires an accredited Sterile Processing program or equivalent experience, certification, and the ability to train others.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Sterile Processing Program or an accredited Surgical Technician program; if not completed, must have an additional three years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.
  • Minimum 1 year of sterile processing experience.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS, keyboard, and mouse operation.
  • Ability to operate complex machinery such as washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and sterilizers.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD) or a Valid CST or Surgery-Certified Credential from CAAHEP or ABHES (renewed before expiration).
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if no card upon hire, must obtain within 30 days and renew before expiration (LA City only).

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and package instrument sets following protocols and IFU; check instrumentation functionality and cleanliness.
  • Disassemble instruments, remove gross contamination, manually wash, decontaminate, and load washers per IFU.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization and disinfection equipment.
  • Maintain sterilization documentation related to items processed, QA, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Dispense sterile instrumentation to OR and maintain sterile inventory via par level maintenance.
  • Communicate with outside departments to ensure timely and efficient workflows.
  • Train and assist other Sterile Processing Technicians.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, instrument, and customer issues with OR and other departments.
  • Receive loaner trays via Casechek and coordinate with outside companies on instrument issues.
  • Prepare loads and operate equipment involved in sterilization processes.
  • Log and maintain documentation using Censitrac tracking system.
  • Potentially train Sterile Processing Technician I as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision of the Sterile Processing Supervisor or Sterile Processing Educator, the Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)II serves with basic knowledge of Sterile Processing techniques and skills and is responsible for decontaminating, operationally checking, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing reusable surgical/clinical instrumentation and implants throughout the organization. The technician operates steam (autoclave) and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) sterilizers, sonic equipment, automated washers, and heat sealers. All tasks are performed in accordance with department and manufacturer IFU guidelines.

Essential Duties
  • Assemble and package surgical/clinic procedure instrument sets following protocols established by electronic count sheets and manufacturer IFU; operationally check instrumentation for functionality and cleanliness.
  • Disassemble instruments/equipment, remove gross contamination, manually wash instruments, decontaminate, and load automated washers according to manufacturer instructions (IFU).
  • Operate and maintain sterilization and disinfection equipment according to established protocols and professional standards.
  • Maintain sterilization documentation related to items processed, quality assurance, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Dispense sterile instrumentation to appropriate locations in the Sterile Storage and OR and maintain sterile inventory through par level maintenance, stock rotation, and quality assurance.
  • Ensure timely and efficient process flows by communicating with outside departments and other sterile processing technicians.
  • Train and assist other Sterile Processing Technicians in the duties listed above.
  • Troubleshoot and address routine equipment, instrument, and customer issues; interface with OR, ancillary departments, and other customers to resolve issues.
  • Receive loaner trays via Casechek and communicate with outside companies to help resolve instrument issues.
  • Prepare loads and operate equipment involved in sterilization processes.
  • Obtain and maintain knowledge of documentation and logging of information using the Censitrac tracking system.
  • May train or provide guidance to the Sterile Processing Technician I as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (HSPA, CBSPD) or a Valid Certified Surgical Tech (CST) or Surgery-Certified Credential (TS-C) from CAAHEP or ABHES certification (must be renewed before expiration).
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City); if no card upon hire, must obtain within 30 days of hire and maintain renewal before expiration (required only in LA City).

Hourly rate range for this position is $27.45 - $46.68.
