Sterile Processing Technician I
Under limited supervision, transports soiled medical equipment, performs decontamination, cleaning, inspection, cleaning verification testing, assembly & packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instruments and equipment. Performs intermediate-level to high-level disinfection, distribution of processed medical equipment for the entire ANMC campus.
Responsibilities
- Perform work under direct or general supervision; may only perform simple or routine aspects of the position.
- Follow standard precautions to control the spread of infection while in decontamination, prep and disinfection processing areas.
- Practice according to manufacturer recommendations for high-level disinfection, including quality control monitoring and assembly of instrumentation.
- Manage inventory to meet operations in both the outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Comply with quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure processing equipment and instruments function properly; manage non‑compliance and coordinate replacements and service.
- Inspect and verify instruments and equipment function properly; submit work orders for equipment and maintenance, repair, or replacement, and remove defective equipment from service.
- Perform quality assurance monitoring for all sterilized products before instrumentation is released for patient care; make decisions for release based on industry standards.
- Participate in maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards; produce productivity reports.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area; communicate appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of medical supplies, instruments and equipment; basic medical terminology and anatomy.
- Knowledge of oral and written communication skills; customer service concepts and practices.
- Knowledge of and use of manufacturer instructions for cleaning, decontamination, and sterilizing medical equipment and surgical instrumentation.
- Knowledge of safety precautions/procedures for operating vehicles, equipment while transporting bio‑hazardous materials.
- Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
- Skill in using analytical and research skills to solve problems and make informed decisions; skill in adapting to changing situations.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.
- Skill in operating a personal computer using a variety of applications.
Additional Qualifications for St. Processing Technician II and III
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements as defined by Hospital Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), ANSI/AAMI ST79 for CRCST, and ANSI/AAMI ST58, ST91 for CER.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instrumentation.
- Knowledge of various types of sterilization materials and equipment; knowledge of the case cart system.
Minimum Education Qualification
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Minimum Qualifications
- Sterile Processing Technician I: Non‑supervisory – None required; experience and/or relevant certification preferred.
- Sterile Processing Technician II: Non‑supervisory – Two (2) years of sterile processing and certification as CRCST or CER; or minimum of four (4) years of experience as a sterile processing technician.
- Sterile Processing Technician III: Non‑supervisory – Four (4) years experience as a sterile processing technician and certification as CRCST, CIS, CER (must have two certifications); or minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a sterile processing technician.
