Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Technician program is required.

Townsen Memorial is hiring for a Sterile Processing Technician for our Humble, TX location!

SUMMARY:

The Sterile Processing Technician, Graduate is responsible for assisting in the preparation and maintenance of sterile instruments and medical equipment. Under supervision, this role supports the collection, cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments, trays, reusable devices, and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures. The technician demonstrates a basic understanding of microbiology, infection control, and aseptic practices to ensure patient and staff safety in all aspects of sterile processing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with operating sterile processing equipment, including washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic, and chemical sterilizers
  • Support accurate documentation and maintenance of sterilization records
  • Help inspect, assemble, and test general and specialty surgical instruments for proper functionality
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as cleaning equipment filters and drains
  • Assist in preparing instrument trays for various clinical areas according to facility policies and procedures
  • Verify and update instrument count sheets under guidance
  • Assist in pulling instruments for surgical cases and supporting operating room (OR) readiness
  • Follow proper sterilization methods based on equipment or supply requirements
  • Support inventory management by stocking, rotating, and documenting supplies to prevent shortages
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information in compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Adhere to Infection Control protocols, Standard Precautions, and OSHA safety standards for healthcare settings
  • Performs other related duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic understanding of medical and surgical terminology
  • Foundational knowledge of surgical instruments, including reusable and micro-surgical tools
  • Familiarity with sterile processing equipment and its appropriate use
  • Awareness of patient care equipment (e.g., IV pumps, PCA machines, CPM units, hypo/hyperthermia devices)
  • General knowledge of sterilization methods and materials
  • Willingness to learn equipment troubleshooting and infection control best practices
  • Ability to follow procedures for pulling and verifying instruments for cases
  • Demonstrates professionalism and adherence to HIPAA and confidentiality standards
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently with guidance
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Willingness to complete ongoing education and assigned training by required deadlines


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician program from an accredited institution
  • Certification in Sterile Processing by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified
