Location: Lancaster General Health in Lancaster, PA
Schedule: Full time (40 hours per week), night shifts from 11pm-7:30am, weekend rotations (approximately once every 6 weekends, depending on staff), weekend call (primarily voluntary but may be assigned on a rotating basis if no volunteers), occasional support in other SPD areas (Endo, Women & Babies).
Summary:
- The Sterile Processing Technician performs duties necessary for decontamination, cleaning, inspection, quality assurance monitoring, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures (AAMI ANSI, IAHCSMM CDC, OSHA, AORN, AST). This role supports Perioperative Services and various departments across Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.
- Qualified individuals must be able to perform the following duties with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Clean, decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize all instrumentation and equipment per departmental policies, infection control standards, and regulations. Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment safely and efficiently. Inspect, assemble, and sterilize all surgical instrumentation and equipment from other entities.
- Monitor and report biological indicators and other quality assurance verifications for patient safety.
- Restock case carts with supplies, instrumentation, and equipment based on the surgical schedule's pick list, ensuring unexpired products are used.
- Stage and deliver case carts, stocking carts, and equipment to designated locations.
- Maintain adequate inventory levels of instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies. Report missing or damaged items and malfunctions of SPD equipment.
- Serve as the initial contact for departmental inquiries, responding courteously and professionally.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, cleaning work areas daily.
- Participate in cross-training for new surgical instrumentation and equipment.
- Support other SPD sites as needed.
- Promote collaborative relationships within the Perioperative team and other departments.
- Participate in departmental Lean, Performance Improvement, and Quality initiatives.
Secondary duties include:
- Repair loaner equipment and ensure sterile loaner sets are available.
- Report instrument malfunctions and discrepancies to management.
- Accurately use computer applications and follow tracking and preference card procedures.
- Attend in-services and continuing education.
- Participate in on-call responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Basic computer skills.
- If hired after 12/28/2020, must obtain certification from CRCST or CSPDT within 18 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Healthcare or Surgical Services experience.
- Surgical Technologist (ST) or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
- One year of surgical instrument processing, sterile processing, or patient care equipment experience.
Credentials:
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED required.
