Job description

Job Summary

The Central Supply Technician is responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment, and reusable medical/surgical items. This position also functions as a Case Cart Attendant for the Operating Room.


Essential Job Functions

  • Receives, sorts, processes, assembles, or sterilizes both patient care equipment and surgical instruments according to established departmental policies.

  • Understands all detergents and disinfectants used to process items. Implements both Universal Precautions and proper use of P.P.E.

  • Operates and loads sterilizers (Steam, ETO, Sterrad, and Steris) and assures biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are correctly performed, incubated, read, and recorded.

  • Assures sterilization records are completed correctly by recording all items processed, making sure the correct label/load gun is used, reading and interpreting chemical integrator per load, observing, and initialing all computerized printouts for accuracy.

  • Adheres to correct use of computerized instrument count sheets.

  • Prepares case carts for delivery to room by using doctor's preference information to assemble required instruments, drugs, and special equipment.

  • Notifies nursing team in room of missing items and confers with coordinator about shortages of supplies and equipment and completes a daily checklist.

  • Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 60 lbs. and stands length of shift.

  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.


Education Requirement

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • National Certification: CRCST or CBSPDT


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Central Processing Course or 1 year experience in instrument processing.

  • Ability to work every other weekend.

  • Ability to work three (3) out of six (6) holidays.

  • Ability to work rotating schedule/shifts based on needs.


Schedule Notes

DAYS: 9:00AM-5:30PM Primarily Mon-Fri but weekends will be required as needed. When scheduled on a weekend, team member will be given a weekday off.


Additional Requirements

  • CRCST (Certified Registered Central Supply Technician) or CBSPDT (Certified Board for Sterile Processing Distribution Technician Certification) Required.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of prior experience as a Certified Sterile Processing Tech/Central Supply Tech.

  • Must be competent/highly experienced with decontaminating, cleaning, and sterilizing surgical instruments, supplies, medical devices, and equipment.

  • Required to assist with processing, assembling, packaging, storing, and keeping inventory of medical devices and surgical supplies (including gloves, surgical masks, and needles).

  • Will be distributing supplies and equipment to departments that need them. Current volume varies, average 20-25 procedures per day.
