Education / Experience
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration
Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT).
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
- Adhere to general hospital standards, promoting a cooperative work environment through effective communication, interpersonal relationships, and team building.
- Clean instruments and equipment using appropriate methods and equipment.
- Ensure correct inspection of reusable items.
- Sort and assemble instruments and/or sets.
- Operate sterilizing units to produce sterile products, reducing the risk of nosocomial infections.
- Maintain the availability of sterilization supplies and preparation solutions.
- Daily check autoclaves and Steris Units with biological indicators and air‑removal test kits; maintain proper logs, records, and charts of sterilizers.
- Maintain technical knowledge of sterilization procedures.
- Responsible for the cleaning, assembling, packaging, maintenance, and sterilization of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment; checking autoclaves for proper function; collaborating with other department staff to provide necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies for posted procedures.
Skills / Qualifications
- Ability to operate equipment such as sterilization equipment, washer‑sterilizer, ultrasonic cleaner, flash autoclave, and high‑vacuum autoclave.
- Ability to communicate effectively with other medical professionals.
- Knowledge of basic and specialty operating room instrumentation.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
Work Environment
Exposure to bodily fluids and tissue; regular exposure to bloodborne diseases; exposure to chemical agents used in cleaning; hazards of steam and heat (possible burns); stressful environment due to equipment demands; unpredictable situations; interruptions; pressure from multiple calls and inquiries; exposure to sharp instruments that may cause cuts or abrasions.
Physical Requirements
Standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching with arms, finger and hand dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing; lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 100 lbs. maximum.
