POSITION SUMMARY
TheCentral Sterile Technicianperforms a variety of cleaning, assembling, and processing duties for reusable instruments and equipment. Performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services to assist nursing personnel. Functions under the direction of the Staff RN, Charge Nurse, or Unit Director, complying with established policies, procedures, and standards of practice in conjunction with all members of the health care team.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
*All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*
1. Clean, inspects, assembles, wraps, and disinfects or sterilizes all reusable items. Identifies and counts all instruments accurately. Prepares all instruments to ensure they are cleaned, inspected, assembled, wrapped, and sterilized according to appropriate practice standards.
2. Adheres to cleaning and equipment cleaning schedule.
3. Uses aseptic procedures and complies with appropriate policies in performing Central Sterile (CS) duties.
4. Runs and maintains the Steris system according to standards and manufacturer’s operational procedures.
5. Manages contaminated items using proper infection control procedures.
6. Cleans and disinfects/sterilizes endoscopes according to manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Appropriately and consistently uses proper personal protective equipment while performing duties.
8. Maintains daily quality control records.
9. Labels instruments clearly and accurately following department policy and procedures.
10. Performs all related duties as requested or required.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Education:High School Graduate
Years of Experience:Must have a concern for patient care, have an interest to complete the workaccurately, economically and to collaborate well with people
Certification:CPR, must obtain Central Sterile Certification within 1 year of hire
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands:Must be able to stand and work for extended periods, move up to twenty (20)pounds, and push heavy racks of supplies. Must be able to tolerate extreme temperatures. Workswith water, washing, handling sharps, and high-pressure steam sterilizers. Environmentoccasionally hot. Regular exposure to hot water.
