Qualifications

  • Previous work experience as a Sterile Processing Technician preferred.

Job description

Sterile Processing Technician

The Sterile Processing Technician performs a variety of indirect patient care activities, including decontamination and sterilization of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. They ensure all necessary instruments and supplies are prepared and ready for assembly on case carts. This role observes strict patient confidentiality following HIPAA regulations and maintains a clean, safe environment. The technician also learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Surgical Tech (CST or TS-C or CORST) certification preferred.
  • Must achieve CRCST, CSPDT, CST, TS-C, or CORST certification within 24 months of hire.
Experience:
  • Required: N/A
  • Preferred: Previous work experience as a Sterile Processing Technician or in a healthcare-related position.
Education/Training:
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Completion of IAHCSMM certification preparation course.
Independent Actions:
  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments and equipment per procedures.
  • Maintain inventory and par levels of instruments and supplies.
  • Follow OSHA and TJC guidelines.
  • Assemble and prepare basic instrument sets and case carts.
Additional Requirements:
  • Shift rotations including weekends and holidays may be required, based on staffing and unit needs.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
  • Mental/Sensory: Reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, reading, logical thinking.
  • Emotional: Ability to handle multiple priorities, adapt to change, and manage customer interactions in a noisy environment.
