Sterile Processing Technician
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Physician and/or Registered Nurse
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
- Eight‑hour days Monday through Friday.
- Responsible for the care and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies.
- Maintains established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment.
- Orders supplies for the area.
- Performs appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keeps accurate records.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- State licensure or certification as a Sterilization Technician, as required by state regulations or contract specifications.
- At least 1 year of experience working in a fast‑paced operating room setting.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods, lift or turn patients.
- Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
- Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours.
- Ability to communicate verbally in person and over the telephone.
- Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor.
- May be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing principles and procedures as applicable to surgical instruments and supplies.
- Proficient in the nursing process and ability to apply best practices to the sterile processing workflow.
- Ability to utilize recognized channels of communication.
- Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health team members.
