Job summary

Northwell Health is seeking a Central Supply Technician to perform instrumentation decontamination, sterilization, packaging and distribution in accordance with department policies. You will handle surgical sets, maintain records and ensure accuracy of instrument counts across shifts.

The role requires a High School diploma and CST certification, with 1–3 years of relevant experience. Your work supports patient care by ensuring sterile supplies are ready for use in the operating room and clinics.

Qualifications

• Current Registered Central Supply Technician Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.

Responsibilities

• Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, reassembles and packages sterile supplies per specifications and manufacturer instructions.
• Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers and related equipment; follows instrument count sheets.
• Rotates trays per sterile storage guidelines and follows safety protocols to prevent injuries.
• Retrieves used trays and instruments for decontamination; checks cleanliness and proper assembly.
• Inspects instruments for cleanliness, proper assembly and functionality.
• Identifies malfunctions, reports to supervisor, and processes instrument requisitions with perioperative staff.
• Transports sterile supplies to surgical and clinical areas.
• Assists with ordering, stocking and inventory; maintains a contaminant-free environment.
• Documents daily activities per department policies.
• Performs related duties; essential functions under ADA.

Job Responsibility

• Dissembles, cleans, sterilizes, reassembles and packages sterile supplies according to specifications and/or manufacturer instructions; follows department procedures to use appropriate sterilization method for various types of instrumentation.
• Operates washers, sterilizers, ultrasonic machines, steam and ethylene oxide sterilizers, heat sealers, and additional equipment during sterilization procedures; adheres to instrument count sheets for surgical sets and case carts.
• Covers and rotates trays and sets per sterile storage guidelines; follows safety protocols to ensure no injury to self/others (proper body mechanics, protective apparel during decontamination procedures, etc.).
• Retrieves used trays, instruments and equipment from various surgical and clinical hospital areas for decontamination; examines instruments and patient care equipment for cleanliness, proper assembly and functionality.
• Examines instruments and patient care equipment for cleanliness, proper assembly and functionality.
• Identifies malfunctioning items, records related information, and promptly notifies supervisor or biomedical engineer; receives and fills requisitions from hospital departments and nursing units; communicates with perioperative staff regarding related instrument needs.
• Transports sterile supplies to assigned surgical and clinical locations.
• Assists in ordering, stocking and maintaining department inventory levels; performs required duties to maintain a contaminant-free work environment.
• Documents and maintains records of daily activities according to department policies and procedures.
