Job summary

UPMC in Altoona, PA is seeking a Central Sterile Technician for a full-time evening shift (2:30 PM - 11:00 PM) with rotating weekends and holidays. Eligible new hires may receive sign-on bonuses up to $5,000, with additional incentives upon certification.

The role involves receiving, reprocessing, and distributing clean and sterile supplies, maintaining CPR carts and isolation cabinets, and performing clerical duties as needed. Prior sterile processing experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Six months of healthcare experience or currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program, preferred.
• Must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and restocks CPR carts.
• Performs all duties according to department policies and procedures.
• Operates all departmental equipment and performs operator maintenance.
• Performs all assigned clerical duties, such as answering the telephone, recording messages, and maintaining records.
• Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and working order for the Operating Room, OB, and other departments.
• Maintains working knowledge of all products in stock and their appropriate locations.
• Prepares and assembles special items, trays, and packs to meet the stated needs of all hospital departments.
• Prepares case carts for the Operating Room.
• Performs all duties related to decontamination, preparation, sterilization/disinfection, and dispatch of instruments, equipment, and supplies for the Operating Room, OB, Cardiology, ED/Trauma, and Nursing and ancillary departments.
• Demonstrates working knowledge of sterilization techniques.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Employees in a Central Sterile position who were active on or before the effective date of 12/27/2020, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and do not need to obtain it unless they transition into a different position that requires certification. Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Certified Registered Central Service Technician, or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management certification required. New employees will have 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the required certification.
