Job summary

Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is seeking a trainee for Perioperative Services - Sterile Processing to learn decontamination, instrument processing, high-level disinfection, and case cart management under supervision. You will complete competency modules and participate in the new hire training program in a restricted access area.

Under supervision, you will gain knowledge of standards (AAMI/ANSI, AORN, IAHCSMM), medical terminology, chemical safety, QA records, equipment repair

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Meets job training requirements within 4-6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Gains knowledge on aseptic technique, standard precautions, and PPE usage.
  • Gains knowledge of infectious diseases as they relate to Sterile Processing.
  • Gains knowledge of AAMI/ANSI, AORN, and IAHCSMM standards and best practices.
  • Gains knowledge of medical terminology related to Sterile Processing.
  • Gains knowledge on caustic agents and chemical handling.
  • Gains knowledge on QA documents and software for instrument tracking and records.
  • Gains knowledge on testing equipment to diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Gains knowledge on operation of sterilizers and high-level disinfectors.
  • Gains knowledge on drying cabinets, heat sealers, and troubleshooting.
  • Gains knowledge on count sheets and preference cards to assemble instrument sets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential.

  • Schedule/Shift/Hours Full Time - Variable
Position Summary

Works under the direct supervision of the Sterile Processing Educator or a Sterile Processing Preceptor while training in the following areas: Decontamination, Scope Processing, High Level Disinfection, Instrument Assembly, Case Carts, and Supply Stock. Completes assigned modules and training as outlined in competency based orientation packet and new hire training program. Works in a restricted access area.

Responsibilities
  • Gains knowledge on utilization of aseptic technique, standard precautions, and use of personal protective equipment (P.P.E)
  • Gains knowledge on cause and spread of infectious diseases as they relate to Sterile Processing functions
  • Gains knowledge of department standards and processes to include AAMI/ANSI, AORN, and IAHCSMM standards and best practices
  • Gains knowledge of medical terminology as it relates to Sterile Processing functions
  • Gains knowledge on proper use and handling of caustic agents and chemicals
  • Gains knowledge of proper use of quality assurance documents and software programs for instrument tracking, sterilization record keeping, and supply distribution/materials management functions
  • Gains knowledge on how to use department specific testing equipment to diagnose and treat equipment failures to include replacing parts, demagnetizing, polishing, sending out for repair, or removing from service and documenting need for non-repairable replacement.
  • Gains knowledge of proper operation of sterilizers and high-level disinfectors, and identifies specific instrumentation and equipment that is appropriate for each process
  • Gains knowledge on operation of drying cabinets and heat sealers, as well as how to troubleshoot operational failures
  • Gains knowledge of how to use count sheet and preference cards to assemble instrument sets and case carts based on Physician preference
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field

  • Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Meets job training requirements within 4-6 months of hire
Working Conditions
  • Bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds
  • On feet a minimum of 7 to 12 hours, depending on length of shift
  • Reaching with hands and arms above head, shoulder height and below
  • Use hand and fingers to handle, lift, and feel
  • Can to see and identify colors correctly
  • Push and pull heavy carts
  • Exposure to contagious diseases, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, needles and other infected material requiring personal protective equipment
  • Read preference cards, pick lists, count sheets, equipment gauges, monitors, schedules and a variety of other written materials
  • Work according to a schedule that allows some freedom to be carried out in a manner that allows work to be completed each day as needed
  • Communicate with patients, physicians, families, and co-workers utilizing appropriate methods such as in person, on telephone, through email, etc
  • Work with equipment and manipulate settings, computer, keyboard, phone system, etc
