Job summary

UChicago Medicine is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician II for our Central Sterile Processing Department in the Chicago area. This 100% onsite role requires rotating through processing areas, handling decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of reprocessable supplies, and supporting OR case carts based on schedules.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Sterile Processing Certification (CRCST or CSPDT) required within 18 months of employment.
• Knowledge of surgical instruments, hospital equipment, and medical terminology.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to respond effectively to urgent and emergency supply needs.
• Ability to lift and move items over 30 lbs and stand for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and decontaminates instruments, trays, supplies, and equipment according to established procedures.
• Operates sterilization and decontamination equipment, including washers, sonic cleaners, and sterilizers.
• Assembles instrument trays and peel packs with proper identification, wrapping, labeling, and sterilization method.
• Monitors and documents sterilization loads, including biological and chemical testing results.
• Identifies and removes defective or unsafe instruments and reports issues to leadership.
• Stocks sterile storage areas and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
• Prepares and delivers case carts based on surgical schedules and preference cards.
• Transports clean and soiled equipment between Sterile Processing and procedural areas.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of all work areas and equipment.
• Participates in quality improvement activities and required departmental training.
• Assists in training and onboarding of new staff.
• Adheres to all safety, infection control, and confidentiality standards.
