Job summary

Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join the SPD team. You will assist in cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments under supervision.

The position emphasizes professionalism, adherence to safety standards, and teamwork within the Surgical and SPD units. A high school diploma and SPD Readiness Course completion within 1 year are required.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of the SPD Readiness Course within 1 year required.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the SPD Operations Specialist or SPD Supervisor.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and ethical standards.
  • Completes tasks using available resources for processing instrumentation and equipment.
  • Learns to work independently in a changing technical environment.
  • Understands cleaning, decontamination, packaging, sterilization and distribution of instrument trays.
  • Maintains regular attendance following Orlando Health policies.
  • Complies with Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • May not yet be certified in SPD Readiness Course.
  • Participates in unit quality control activities.
  • Understands the role's relation to patient care.
  • Helps maintain a safe environment for staff and patients.

A Brief Overview

Responsible for cleaning, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of instruments and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • The Sterile Processing Technician works under the direct supervision of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Operations Specialist, or SPD Supervisor, must be able to work cooperatively with other members of the Surgical and Sterile Processing Team.
  • Demonstrates a sense of professionalism and ethical standards.
  • Able to complete tasks as assigned and use the appropriate resources and references available for processing instrumentation and equipment.
  • Using attained knowledge of sterilization processes, the Sterile Processing Technician will begin to learn to work independently in an ever-changing technical environment.
  • Demonstrates, through clinical practice, knowledge, and an understanding of sterilization process, from cleaning and decontamination through packaging, sterilization, and distribution of instrument tray for surgical case carts according to pick lists or surgeon’s preference cards.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • The Sterile Processing Technician may or may not be certified or possess completion status in the SPD Readiness Course.
  • Participates in all unit quality control activities.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship of their role to patient care.
  • Responsible for helping to maintain a safe environment for fellow team members as well as patients.
