Job summary

Effinghamschools is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to decontaminate, process, and prepare surgical instruments for procedures. You will ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards and support efficient OR operations.

The role requires knowledge of medical terminology, instrument inspection, and strong communication skills, with a minimum of one year in a sterile processing or hospital setting. Training and certification in sterile processing are required.

Qualifications

• Education level equivalent to completion high school.
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and various surgical instruments; inspection techniques.
• Ability to prioritize work without close supervision; memory for details.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Must hold CBSPD, HSPA, or IAHCSMM certification; CST certification also satisfies.
• Minimum of one year of experience in acute care hospital, sterile processing, or surgery dept.

Responsibilities

• Decontaminate, process, and prepare surgical instruments and equipment.
• Operate steam and sterilization equipment per manufacturer instructions.
• Monitor inventory of SPD consumables and flag low stock.
• Assemble instruments and supplies for operating room procedures; restock after use.
• Coordinate daily flow of instruments and devices to support surgical teams.
• Monitor physical, chemical, and biological indicators; document results for safety compliance.
• Adhere to OSHA, Joint Commission standards; use PPE; follow safety procedures.
• Support quality improvement initiatives and data collection.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with privacy policies.
• Participate in departmental meetings and ongoing training.
• Perform any other duties assigned by team lead or director.
