Job description

SUMMARY:

The Sterile Processing Quality/Education Coordinator reports to the Quality Assurance/Education Manager. Under general supervision, this role involves planning, designing, monitoring, and auditing procedures related to the processing, sterilization, and HLD of medical devices to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards. The coordinator develops training and certification programs for sterile processing personnel, covering standard techniques in decontamination, assembly, sterilization/HLD, and distribution. Maintains documentation on all related information systems, including EPIC, PeopleSoft, and instrument tracking systems, to facilitate training procedures. Establishes and maintains relationships with operating room management, staff, and OR Educators for training development and education/in-services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or equivalent certification.
  • Must obtain Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) and Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) within 12 months of hire, and the other within 18 months, as a condition of employment.
  • Advanced Certifications such as CIS and CER are preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years in the Sterile Processing field.
  • Minimum of 1 year in a lead or higher responsibility role within sterile processing.
  • Strong knowledge of principles and practices of sterile processing.
  • Expertise in instrumentation, equipment, inventory management, and case cart management.
  • Proficient in oral and written English communication.
  • Computer proficiency and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Quality Responsibilities
  • Assist with quality improvement projects, process monitoring, key performance metrics, and audits of the sterile processing departments.
  • Lead initiatives to improve service quality and department performance.
  • Assess and monitor staff performance and quality to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct quality assurance audits and support staff efficiency in sterile processing tasks.
  • Report quality metrics and improvement outcomes to the Quality Assurance/Education Manager.
  • Participate in department shift huddles, sharing quality and educational updates.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant standards and regulations (AORN, AAMI, The Joint Commission, CMS, CDC, OSHA, FDA, hospital policies).
  • Monitor and audit sterilization logs, checklists, and documentation for compliance.
  • Regularly audit decontamination and assembly work for quality and adherence to processes.
  • Provide feedback to staff and collaborate with supervisors for performance improvement.
  • Maintain professional development through seminars and organizational participation.
Education Responsibilities
  • Oversee training for all sterile processing staff.
  • Coordinate orientation for new hires.
  • Lead staff education and training initiatives for professional growth.
  • Evaluate staff's ability to provide sterile and accurate instrument sets.
  • Report on educational metrics and improvements.
  • Train staff on EPIC, instrument tracking, and related electronic systems.
  • Assist with Net Learning orientation and support preceptors.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work occurs in patient care and sterile processing areas, with exposure to infectious materials, contaminated equipment, and supplies. Safety procedures are to be followed to minimize hazards.
