Job summary

Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA is seeking a Sterile Processing professional to ensure proper decontamination, preparation, storage, and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies. This role supports SPD operations and requires adherence to safety and quality standards.

The position involves rotating evenings/nights, on-call duties, and working in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail and teamwork are essential for success in this department.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • High School Education or GED.
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, concise by phone, intercom and in person.
  • Successful completion of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of CCH Medical Terminology challenge exam.
  • Must have one of the following: Anatomy & Physiology course or CCH Anatomy Exam or SPD Technician Certification.
  • Three years recent SPD experience.
  • Must take and maintain SPD Technician Certification exam within specified timeline.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and uses appropriate methods to decontaminate instruments and clinical equipment.
  • Sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse and disinfect instruments.
  • Assemble instrumentation using count sheets and label instruments.
  • Properly protect, wrap/containerize and label instruments.
  • Handle, store and distribute sterile supplies and equipment to customers.
  • Operate SPD equipment including steam, ETO, Sterrad and Steris I sterilizers, cart washers and ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Maintain inventory and communicate supply issues promptly.
  • Serve as a resource to SPD customers and participate in training and meetings.

Job description

Purpose of Position:

Serves as resource to Sterile Processing customers by ensuring that all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly processed.


Description

Decontamination


  • Identifies and uses appropriate methods and solutions to decontaminate instruments and clinical equipment.

  • Able to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.

  • Understands and adheres to proper PPE attire.


Preparing Instruments


  • Consistently uses count sheets to correctly assemble instrumentation.

  • Properly protect, wrap/containerize and or peel package and label instruments

  • Identifies and inspects for cleanliness and functionality of instrumentation.


Storage/Distribution


  • Properly handles and stores sterile supplies, equipment and instruments.

  • Accesses Doctor preference cards.

  • Retrieves, disburses and tracks medical and surgical supplies and equipment to the customer in a quality and timely manner.


Sterilization Process


  • Selects appropriate sterilization methods.

  • Understands and adheres to the correct practices of sterilization.

  • Properly documents and verifies sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficiency of the sterilization process.


Equipment


  • Operates and understands the equipment specific to SPD: steam, ETO, Sterrad and Steris I sterilizers, cart washers, washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners and heat sealers as well as a different array of testing devices.


Inventory Control


  • Understands and implements the processes involved in ordering, receiving, stocking and monitoring usage of surgical supplies.

  • Communicates supply issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.


General


  • Serves as a resource to customers on all SPD functions.

  • In conjunction with management tracks his/her progress in regards to training, staff meetings and in-service education.

  • Performs duties as a SPD Aide independently, works proficiently without direct supervision.

  • Demonstrates the ability to stand “on call’

  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

  • Helps precept new employees (Grades 10, 11a, 12a)

  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.

  • Perform other work-related duties as requested or assigned.


Qualifications

Qualifications Grade 8, Sterile Processing Aide


  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English

  • High School Education or GED.

  • Basic Computer skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills, being concise by phone, intercom and in person.

  • Successful completion of Medical Terminology course OR successful passage of CCH Medical Terminology challenge exam.

  • Must have 1 of the following:

  • Successful completion of Anatomy & Physiology course (High School level or higher)

  • Successful passage of CCH Anatomy Exam

  • SPD Technician Certification

  • 3 years recent (within the past 5 years) SPD experience

  • Must take the SPD Technician Certification exam within 12 months of hire.

  • Must successfully pass the SPD Technician Certification exam within eighteen (18) months of hire and must maintain certification.


Qualifications Grade 10, Sterile Processing Technician I

Must qualify as a Grade 8 - Sterile Processing Aide. In addition,



  • 1 year experience as a SPD aide

  • SPD Technician Certification


Qualifications Grade 11a, Sterile Processing Technician II

Must qualify as a Grade 10 - Sterile Processing Technician I. In addition,



  • 1 Year experience as a SPD Technician

  • Surgical Instrument Processor Certification


Qualifications Grade 12a, Sterile Processing Technician III

Must qualify as a Grade 11a - Sterile Processing Technician II. In addition,



  • Surgical Instrument Processor Certification and/or Ambulatory Surgery Technician Certification


Schedule Details:

40 Hours Per Week, Rotating Evenings/Nights, Monday-Friday, 2p-10p, 3p-11p, 4p-12a, Rotating Weekends, Rotating Holidays, On-Call Required
