Job description

JOB TITLE: STEM Hub Tutor
PAY RANGE: $17.13 - $17.13/hour
START DATE: Fall 2026

JOB PURPOSE

STEM Hub Tutors are student employees who help students in introductory STEM classes, primarily Mathematics and Biology, master basic concepts and develop effective study skills. Tutors work with students in a drop-in setting in the STEM Hub and provide individualized academic support.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Tutor drop-in students in the STEM Hub, usually for two hours each week.
  • Help students develop effective study skills and academic strategies.
  • Help students understand and apply basic principles and concepts in introductory STEM courses.
  • Explain concepts clearly and adapt explanations to meet individual student needs.
  • Encourage students to develop confidence and independence in their academic work.
  • Maintain confidentiality about students whom they tutor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS TO BE DERIVED BY STUDENTS IN THIS JOB

STEM Hub Tutors will improve their own content knowledge by working with their peers in a mentoring capacity. They will develop interpersonal skills and effective collaboration with people from all backgrounds; practice verbal communication skills; and demonstrate time management, responsibility, and the ability to work independently.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • STEM Hub Tutors for 2026–2027 must be knowledgeable in one or more of the following courses: Bio 101, 102, 205; Astr 110, 178, 179; Math 124, 125, 126, 225. Additional courses may be added in subsequent years.
  • Must have earned at least an A- grade in the class or classes for which they are tutoring, or in class(es) with similar content.
  • Must be recommended by faculty in the relevant department or program.
  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at Whitman College.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality about students whom they tutor.
