GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Suffolk Public Schools: Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington: Works under the guidance and supervision of Booker T. Washington Elementary Administration, the SABTW Instructional Specialist, and ODU Executive Director for the Center for Educational Innovation and Opportunity to support the STEM Academy at Booker T. Washington Elementary. Responsibilities include overseeing instruction of grade level, developing curriculum development, fostering innovation in the classroom, participating and providing professional development, and promoting STEM integration to prepare students for future success.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

  • Develops and administers the school elementary curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to maximize instructional time.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of student learning and modifies instructional methods to meet individual student needs, including those with special needs.
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small-group instruction, as well as student learning.
  • Instructs students in principles of responsible citizenship and other subjects specified by applicable laws, regulations, and school policies.
  • Ensures student conduct aligns with school standards and district policies, establishing and maintaining standards of behavior necessary for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Supervises students during activities outside the classroom, including school transportation and extracurricular events.
  • Incorporates fieldwork, experiments, and interactive activities to enhance engagement and understanding.
  • Develops project-based learning activities to promote critical thinking and real-world problem-solving.
  • Facilitates inquiry-based and hands-on learning experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.
  • Coordinates with other elementary professional staff, especially within grade level, to evaluate curriculum and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Participates in professional learning communities (PLCs) and ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current in educational practices.
  • Mentors student teachers or interns as part of the lab school’s mission to train future educators.
  • Works closely with fellow teachers, university partners, and curriculum developers to refine teaching practices.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents regarding progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Organizes and maintains accurate records of student activities, achievements, and attendance in compliance with district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and stay informed of developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.

Additional Duties

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the SABTW Lab School Specialist and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy to include design thinking, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
  • Skill in developing articulate written reports and effective oral presentations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, associates, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Must possess a current Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in elementary education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels.

EQUIPMENT

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone. Uses STEM-related technology (e.g. 3D-printers, online coding platforms, etc.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Travel)

Travels to university site(s) and professional meetings as required.

  • Salary Range: $55,141 - $90,122 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)
  • Contract: 10 Months
