Overview

Please note that this position is contingent upon the successful award of a contract currently under bid.

Dedicated to serving those who defend the US and warfighters, Nisga'a MOSTT offers Military Operations support and Specialized Tactical Training (MOSTT). Nisga'a MOSTT's services include aviation and military training, cybersecurity, intelligence gathering and analysis, and simulation and exercise support, as well as aviation flight logistics support and unmanned aerial vehicle support.

Summary:

The Steelworker Apprentice/Advance Instructor will provide support for the Naval Construction Training Center located in Gulfport, MS. Instructor personnel are designated by the command for the Advanced Steel Worker School.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide apprentice level training in construction mathematics, blueprint reading and basic layout, gas welding equipment, gas cutting, gas welding and brazing, silver brazing, vertical and flat arc welding, reinforcing steel, and fiber line.
  2. Provide apprentice level training in basic sheet metal layout, pattern development, fabrication, and pre-engineered buildings including installation and maintenance of doors.
  3. Provide entry level training in a course currently under development, which will replace both the SW Class A Block 0 and Block 1 courses. Updated data will be provided when available.
  4. Provide in-depth instruction for a course covering the necessary knowledge and skills to perform as a Welding Supervisor, including management systems, weld requirements, welding processes, metallurgy, symbols, instructions, economics, standards, inspection, safety, reports, and records.
  5. Provide in-depth instruction for steelworker trainees on pattern development and layout for sheet metal ductwork, including complex angles, transitions, and fabrication of ductwork components.
  6. Provide instruction on interpreting construction prints and specifications, material estimating, reinforcing steel bend schedules, and using hand and power tools for reinforcing steel work.
  7. Instruct on Oxy-acetylene Brazing, Cutting, and Welding (OAW) on metals such as brass, copper, and mild steel, including equipment setup, material prep, and welding positions.
  8. Teach pipe layout using steel squares and tools, including cutting, fitting, and assembling pipe transitions and joints.
  9. Provide instruction on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) on structural steel and pipe, including setup, welding positions, and weld types, as well as maintenance of welding equipment.
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in structural steel fabrication, welding, and blueprint interpretation.
  • Knowledge of rigging and structural assembly methods.
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy construction standards and protocols.
  • Excellent instructional and communication skills for diverse learners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of steelworker/welding experience.
  • Skilled welder with documented experience in various welding techniques and metal identification.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching or mentoring experience is highly desirable.
