Job summary

RHI Magnesita is seeking a Steel Process Expert to drive technical excellence and optimize steelmaking processes for North American customers. The role is fully remote with 50-75% travel to customer sites, collaborating with Sales, R&D and Recycling teams to deliver value.

You will leverage your deep knowledge of refractory materials and steelmaking to diagnose issues, design improvements, and provide hands-on support across customer operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering required; Master's or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in steelmaking, refractories, or related industry.
  • Deep knowledge of refractory products, applications and steelmaking processes.
  • Experience with integrated steelmaking operations and process equipment (BOF, RH Degassers) preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to translate complex issues into practical solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with customers and internal teams.
  • Advanced Microsoft 365 proficiency; SAP experience is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to provide hands-on support in heavy industrial environments.
  • Ability to travel extensively to North American customer locations (50-75%).

Responsibilities

  • Analyze slag chemistry and operating conditions to develop technical recommendations.
  • Investigate refractory wear issues and suggest corrective actions.
  • Select and recommend refractory materials and designs for customer needs.
  • Conduct technical training for customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Sales during customer visits to evaluate product performance and opportunities.
  • Support sustainability and circular economy initiatives with Recycling teams.
  • Work with R&D, Sales and other teams to develop innovative solutions.
  • Provide field support for refractory equipment and related systems.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Steel Process Expert to drive technical excellence and process optimization for steelmaking customers across North America. In this customer-facing role, you will leverage your expertise in steelmaking and refractory applications to solve operational challenges, improve product performance, and support sustainable growth. Working closely with Sales, R&D, and Recycling teams, you will help deliver innovative solutions that create value for both customers and the business.

This remote position requires 50-75% travel to customer sites.

What You’ll Do
  • Partner with steelmaking customers to optimize processes and improve operational performance.
  • Analyze slag chemistry and operating conditions to develop technical recommendations and process improvements.
  • Investigate refractory wear issues, troubleshoot application challenges, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Select and recommend refractory materials and product designs tailored to customer requirements and operating practices.
  • Conduct technical training sessions for customers, sales teams, and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Sales during customer visits to evaluate product performance and identify growth opportunities.
  • Support sustainability and circular economy initiatives in partnership with Recycling teams.
  • Work closely with Research & Development, Sales, and other technical teams to develop innovative solutions for customer challenges.
  • Provide field support for refractory application equipment, including mixers, gunning machines, and related systems.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations and established workplace standards.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline required; Master's degree or PhD preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in steelmaking, refractories, or a closely related industry. (Industry experience may be considered in place of a degree.)
  • Deep knowledge of refractory products, applications, and steelmaking processes, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and specialty alloys.
  • Experience with integrated steelmaking operations and process equipment, such as BOF, RH Degassers, and related systems, is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex technical issues into practical solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage customers and internal teams.
  • Advanced Microsoft 365 proficiency; SAP experience is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to provide hands-on support in heavy industrial environments.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively to customer locations throughout North America (50-75%).
