As a Steam Fitter II at the University of Iowa, you’ll help maintain and improve the systems that provide steam, heating, cooling, and water distribution across campus. Working across both the Iowa City campus and Oakdale satellite campus, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable delivery of essential utility services that support teaching, research, healthcare, and daily campus operations.

This role offers a mix of field work, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, and project support in a collaborative environment focused on safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Do

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on steam, domestic water, hot water, chilled water, compressed air, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer distribution systems
• Install, operate, maintain, and repair high-pressur e steam systems and associated equipment, including pressure-reducing stations, steam traps, valves, expansion joints, and metering equipment
• Inspect, maintain, and repair direct-buried and tunneled utility infrastructure, including water mains, hydrants, valves, access structures, and underground piping systems
• Install, modify, repair, and fabricate piping systems and mechanical equipment, utilizing welding and other trade-related techniques as required
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, piping diagrams, technical drawings, and system documentation to support maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities
• Coordinate utility outages, building shutdowns, and system restorations while communicating with stakeholders and ensuring all work is completed safely and efficiently
• Plan work activities, identify material and equipment needs, establish safe work practices, and return utility systems to reliable service

What You’ll Bring

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
• Minimum two (2) years of experience in steamfitting, pipefitting, welding, plumbing, utility maintenance, industrial operations, military service, or related mechanical trades; registered apprenticeship training, technical education, or military training may supplement relevant experience
• Experience working with steam systems, utility piping systems, or industrial mechanical equipment, including systems operating at pressures greater than 90 psig
• Knowledge of utility distribution systems, piping components, maintenance practices, and applicable building, safety, and industry codes
• Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining utility piping systems and associated mechanical equipment
• Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, piping diagrams, technical drawings, and repair documentation
• Ability to analyze system issues, perform mathematical calculations, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with team members, customers, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders
• This role requires attendance at a works site on a daily basis
• Must be available to travel up to 10% of the time
• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license/clean driving record; to drive company owned vehicles while on campus
• Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting (min. 50 lbs.)
• 24-hour emergency on-call responsibilities, must have a personal cell phone
• Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
• This position consists of 75% of outdoor work, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions

Compensation

Hourly Range: $27.40 - $42.00 USD hourly

This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate. ENGIE complies with all federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors.

In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan.
