Job summary

Qualifications

The Fellowship

STEAM the Streets is seeking a Marine Science Storytelling Fellow to support an exciting marine science communications project funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and conducted in partnership with researchers at the University of Connecticut (UConn) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

The project focuses on studying the potential effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) from offshore wind energy infrastructure on sand lance, a small forage fish that plays a critical role in the Gulf of Maine ecosystem and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

Scientists are working to better understand how marine species may be affected by offshore wind development and how future projects can responsibly coexist with ocean ecosystems.

The Fellow will help make this complex science accessible and engaging by documenting research activities, interviewing scientists, creating digital media content, and sharing stories that connect communities with ocean science, climate solutions, and clean energy research.

What You’ll Do

Your work will span three core areas.

Content Creation

Visit research labs at UConn, Woods Hole, and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region to capture research activities.

Participate in documenting a full-day research boat trip off Scituate, Massachusetts.

Produce short-form educational videos highlighting project findings, research activities, and marine science concepts.

Produce researcher spotlights and career pathway profiles.

Contribute to blog or newsletter-style project updates.

Capture photo, video, and interview content during project activities.

Create behind-the-scenes content documenting laboratory work, field activities, and the research process.

Science Storytelling

Interview scientists, researchers, and project partners.

Translate technical scientific concepts into accessible public-facing content.

Develop story ideas that connect research findings to real-world environmental and community issues.

Highlight career pathways in marine science, environmental research, offshore wind, and science communication.

Community Engagement

Create content designed to inspire youth and underserved communities to explore STEM careers.

Support content distribution through social media, digital platforms, and community engagement efforts.

Represent STEAM the Streets professionally when interacting with project partners and stakeholders.

Hands-On Experience

Work alongside marine scientists and researchers while documenting laboratory, field, and boat-based research.

Gain exposure to offshore wind, marine ecology, and climate research careers while building professional relationships and portfolio-ready content.

Must-Haves

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Interest in storytelling, journalism, content creation, media production, communications, environmental science, or marine science.

Experience creating videos, social media content, photography, blogs, podcasts, or other digital media.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Curiosity and willingness to learn about marine science, offshore wind, and environmental research. Prior marine science experience is not required.

Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and capture and edit content with support and mentorship from STEAM the Streets staff.

Comfort interviewing professionals and asking thoughtful questions.

Reliable transportation and access to a cell phone capable of recording high-quality video.

Ability to travel periodically to research, laboratory, and field locations in Cape Cod, Eastern Massachusetts, and Storrs, Connecticut, and participate in a full-day research boat trip.

Comfort working in both remote and in-person environments.

Strongly Preferred

Applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in STEAM fields and communities that have historically had limited access to science and career exploration opportunities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Candidates committed to field visits to UConn and the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region - including Cape Cod, Cape Ann, Boston's North Shore, and South Shore - are especially encouraged to apply.

PAY, STRUCTURE & COMMITMENT

$25/hour for approximately 12-16 hours per week.

Part-time, flexible schedule from October 2026 through June 2028.

Hybrid structure: remote work plus periodic in-person laboratory and field visits in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Reliable transportation is required; mileage for approved project-related travel will be reimbursed.

Must have access to a cell phone capable of recording high-quality video.

Must be able to participate in periodic field/lab travel and a full-day research boat trip.

Must be 18 years of age or older.
