Job Summary:
The Steam Plant Engineer in Charge directs the operation of the College’s central heating plant, including co-generation, natural gas fired, and biomass systems that provide steam and electrical power for most campus facilities. Responsibilities include: supervision of the operation and maintenance of the high-pressure boilers, turbine generator, biomass material handling equipment, and auxiliary equipment. This position ensures that the Central Heating Plant meets the needs of the campus and provides necessary steam for campus climate control, hot water and cooking. This position will also perform duties as shift operator in the plant. Supervise and maintain the College’s fuel depot and standby generators.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities

- Supervise the operation and maintenance of the central heating plant, including high pressure boilers, turbine generator, biomass/ash material handling equipment and other plant equipment.
- Perform routine supervisory tasks including scheduling of work, coordinating assignments, completing evaluations, handling corrective and progressive disciplinary actions, monitoring safety, and scheduling training.
- Provide constant, reliable thermal services to the campus.
- Display sound technical knowledge to operate the plant, troubleshoot issues and supervise employees independently.
- Work with the Associate Vice President to plan and schedule necessary preventative maintenance, shut down periods and training.
- Maintain the tools, equipment and mechanical areas in a clean, neat condition
- Maintain a safe work environment. Instruct employees in safe work practices and oversee their implementation.
- Perform duties as shift operator as required to support maintenance efforts and coverage gaps
- Monitor and control emissions in accordance with Colby directives, the State of Maine DEP and federal regulations.
- Maintain, repair and overhaul all Steam Plant Equipment.
- Maintain, repair and monitor the College fuel depot.
- Maintain accurate, reliable plant records in accordance with good maintenance practices and as required by the College, the State of Maine DEP, State Boiler Inspectors Office and other regulatory bodies.
- Research, develop and submit annual maintenance and repair budgets.
- Manage annual budget to complete work within budget.
- Provide routine training for staff, ensuring they are up to date with safety and operational training needed in the performance of their duties.
- Work in a positive and cooperative manner with other department personnel and the Colby community.
Position Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and/or experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional post-secondary education is desired such as seminars, certificates, related college courses or other documented training.
- A Maine State 2nd class Stationary Engineers or higher license required.
- Computer skills are required; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite required and File Maker Pro desired.
- Minimum of 10 years experience in steam plant operations, including biomass experience, required. College courses may be substituted for years of experience at the College’s discretion.

- This position works in an industrial plant environment, both indoors and outdoors.
- The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required.
- There may be occurrences of employees, past employees, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations.
- While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities.
- There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personal computer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor.
- An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds to perform essential position functions.
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds.
