Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a Steam Distribution System Mechanic to maintain and repair its underground steam and condensate distribution network. You will perform preventive and corrective maintenance, inspect infrastructure, and troubleshoot issues to ensure reliable campus utilities.

Responsibilities include repairing piping and components, documenting work in CMMS, and adhering to safety procedures (LOTO, confined space, hot work).

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with four years of related experience.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification preferred; welding training preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable MVR per University guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain underground steam and condensate systems with preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose distribution infrastructure to minimize interruptions.
  • Repair and fabricate components, including piping, supports, and insulation.
  • Respond to alarms, outages, and equipment failures to restore service quickly.
  • Document inspections and maintenance in CMMS and ensure safety compliance.
  • Adhere to LOTO, confined space, hot work, PPE, and other safety procedures.
