License & Certification Requirements

• District of Columbia: A valid Steam Engineer license (3rd, 2nd, or 1st Class)
• Maryland: A valid Stationary Engineer license (Grade 4 through Grade 1)
• Other Jurisdictions: Equivalent municipal or state Operating Engineer licenses, or an equivalent VMET certification

Shift Availability

• 1st shift: 6:00 am–2:30 pm, Monday – Friday
• 2nd shift: 12:30 pm–11:00 pm, Monday – Thursday
• 3rd shift: 10:00 pm–8:30 am, Monday – Thursday
• 4th shift: 7:00 am–7:30 pm, Friday – Sunday
• 5th shift: 7:00 pm–7:30 am, Friday – Sunday

Responsibilities

The Stationary Operations Engineer is responsible for overseeing and maintaining all stationary equipment within our facility, ensuring its optimal operation and safety. This role requires an in-depth understanding of the machinery, routine check‑ups, troubleshooting, and efficient repair methods.

Maintenance and Operation: Safely operate, maintain, and monitor boilers, HVAC systems, refrigeration units, and other stationary equipment.

• Must be experienced in maintenance and repairs on commercial‑industrial building equipment—including chillers ≥ 500 tons, boilers, pumps, control systems, air handlers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, VAVs, and VFDs. Candidates must demonstrate practical knowledge of chiller plant operations, read and understand blueprints, schematics, and specifications, and be able to respond to service calls for gas‑fired boilers, chillers, AHUs, fire pumps, generators, UPS, ATS, BAS, and fire alarm operations.

Routine Inspections – Conduct regular inspections to identify potential issues, ensuring equipment is operating within set parameters and adhering to safety standards.

• Respond to service calls by determining the problem, identifying the cause, and implementing a solution.
• Complete required documentation utilizing the site CMMS system.
• Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts; adjust controls to ensure safe and efficient operation; record logs; maintain equipment in good working order; perform preventive maintenance per approved job plans and company standards.

Troubleshooting – Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.

Documentation – Maintain detailed records of all inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, and replacements; ensure all operations are logged and documented in compliance with organizational standards.

Compliance – Ensure operations adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations and standards related to stationary equipment operations.

Collaboration – Coordinate with other maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to ensure seamless operation and timely resolution of issues.

• Relay questions, progress, information requirements, and discrepancies in system and other issues impacting the operation of the building, its equipment, and the comfort of occupants; initiate follow‑up action if required in a timely manner.

Emergency Response – Act as a first responder during any stationary equipment emergencies, implementing safety procedures and addressing issues promptly.

Continuous Learning – Stay updated with the latest trends, equipment, and best practices in the field, attending workshops and training as necessary.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 6 + years of facilities maintenance experience.
• Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements, including U.S. Citizenship; ability to obtain & maintain HSPD & Secret, preferred HSPD‑12 & Secret Active.
• Demonstrated experience in the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of central utility plant and institutional mechanical systems supporting mission‑critical, government, commercial high‑rise, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, campus, or other complex facilities environments.
• Strong problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation including sequence of operations, technical product literature, programming manuals, and specifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Manufacturer chiller training/certification (Trane, Johnson Controls/York, Carrier, Daikin, etc.)
• BAS/DDC platform training (Schneider Electric, Niagara, Honeywell, Siemens, Johnson Controls Metasys, etc.)
• Boiler combustion or burner management training
• NETA/NFPA/ASME‑related operational familiarity
• Industrial or institutional mechanical systems training

Abilities

• Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis; demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform tasks such as loading, unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in transportation of materials; follow proper lifting techniques and safety protocols.
• Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance.
• Work at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and all types of ladders.
• Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull and reach overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
• Possess good vision (may be corrected) and the ability to see in color; ability to hear and communicate in English.
• May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
• Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong (recognize a problem).
• Apply general rules to specific problems to produce logical answers.
• Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events).

Pay Range

USD $36.31 – $54.46 per hour.
