Job summary

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, NC is seeking a Stationary Engineer to operate and maintain campus HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and related equipment, ensuring safety and occupant comfort.

You will follow standard operating procedures, maintain CMMS logs, troubleshoot complex issues, perform preventive maintenance, and coordinate with facilities leadership on contractor work.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting to minimize impact on hospital operations.
  • Responds to alarms promptly and optimizes operations using trend reports.
  • Read blueprints and manuals to gain knowledge for assignments.

Major Responsibilities
  • Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures.
  • Operates all campus heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment including boilers, steam absorption and centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, fans, pumps and systems in a manner that optimizes efficiency, safety, and occupant comfort per department policies and procedures without guidance/assistance.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports on all equipment startup, failures, problems, work in progress and completed work through logbooks and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) without guidance/assistance.
  • Advanced level of skill to utilize BAS as a tool for both monitoring and controlling HVAC equipment. Responds to alarms in a timely and correct manner. Optimizes operation using trending reports as appropriate.
  • Advanced level of skill to perform preventive maintenance on HVAC and other equipment as assigned per established procedures including inspection, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, testing, flushing, minor repairs, rebuilding and replacing parts/components to ensure that systems remain within the established operating parameters.
  • Advanced level of skill to troubleshoot complex issues with HVAC equipment determine the root cause in a timely manner. Executes repairs or installations with minimal impact to the hospital and patient care. Appropriately requests assistance as warranted by the situation.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical gas systems.
  • Responds to building occupant complaints in a timely and professional manner and takes appropriate corrective action. Keeps requester appraised of the status of corrective action.
  • Maintains current daily logs, preventive maintenance records and equipment repair files to comply with local, state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Performs routine general maintenance including painting, plumbing, carpentry, equipment testing and repair, ventilation, lighting, electrical, groundskeeping and snow removal. Performs repairs on a large variety of facility systems such as mechanical, electrical, building systems and other critical systems without guidance/assistance. Provides timely and proper response to assigned service calls, work orders and preventative maintenance to maintain a safe and efficient environment. Documents all tasks and work time on the CMMS.
  • Reads blueprints and maintenance manuals to gain knowledge needed to complete assignments.
  • Has the ability to define new and more efficient methodologies/approaches.
  • Leads small projects and assists facilities leadership with overseeing contractor projects.
  • Acts as an informal resource for peers with less experience.
Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required
  • Stationary Engineer license from the municipality of work location or Power Engineer certification (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th Class) from either the National Institute for the Uniform Licensing of Power Engineers (NIULPE) or the American Society of Power Engineers (ASOPE). Equivalent certifications from federal organizations such as the United States Navy will also be considered.
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification
  • EPA Fuel Underground Storage Tank (UST) Class A/B Operator Certification
  • Valid Driver's License
Education Required
  • Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of technical training.
Experience Required
  • 5 or more Years of Stationary Engineering Experience

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, crawl, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. from floor to overhead, lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to chest-level, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. at waist height a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 50 lbs. of force.
  • Exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards and therefore knowledge of safety precautions.
  • Position requires travel. May be exposed to road/weather hazards.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
