Job Description
The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) is a non-exempt employee trained to provide personal care and services to hospice patients, supplementing care provided by family or other caregivers.
Assigned Job Responsibilities
- Perform personal care activities as outlined in written assignments. These may include:
- Helping patients maintain good personal hygiene.
- Planning and preparing meals; assisting with feeding if needed.
- Assisting with ambulation.
- Assisting with treatments ordered by the physician and supervised by a nurse, such as changing colostomy bags, assisting with mobility aids, dressing reinforcement, range of motion exercises, measuring intake/output, and medication assistance.
- Reading and recording vital signs like temperature, pulse, and respiration.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
- Promoting mental alertness through engaging activities.
- Providing emotional and psychological support.
- Reporting changes in patient condition to the nurse and team.
- Teaching basic personal care to caregivers.
- Practicing infection control measures.
- Documenting patient status and care activities.
- Completing at least 12 hours of in-service training annually.
- Performing other tasks as assigned.
Limitations of the Home Health Aide (HHA)
- Cannot be assigned to institutional settings.
- Cannot change sterile dressings or irrigate body cavities or wounds.
- Cannot perform gastric lavage, catheterize patients, or administer medications.
- Cannot care for tracheotomy tubes or suction patients.
- Cannot provide unassigned personal care.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Meets personnel qualifications per 42 C.F.R. Sections 484.4 and 484.36.
- 75 hours of training as per federal regulations.
- Successfully completed a competency evaluation program.
State Allowable Training/Certification
Certifications vary by state, including CNA, HHA, HA, CHHA, Homemaker-Home Health Aide, and others.
Special Requirements
- Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Availability of a telephone at home.
Essential Functions/Physical Demands
Must be able to assist with patient transfers, lift objects over 20 pounds, stand or walk for extended periods, and perform visual and physical tasks as described.
Direction Received
- Reports directly to and receives clinical direction from the VITAS Nurse.
