Job summary

State Public Defender – State of Minnesota is seeking an executive leader to direct Minnesota's public defense system, oversee statewide operations, and implement policies in alignment with the State Board of Public Defense.

The role requires overseeing chiefs, managing budgets, coordinating with courts and legislators, and advancing reforms to ensure effective, ethical, and equitable representation for clients across the state.

Qualifications

• Admission to the Minnesota state bar.
• 7–10 years of criminal law experience.
• 5 years of administrative experience including budget and labor relations.

Responsibilities

• Supervise Chief District Public Defenders and Chief Appellate Defender.
• Lead statewide employee training program.
• Respond to inquiries from the public about Defender activities.
• Serve as liaison with courts, court administration, and legislature.
• Coordinate policy issues with Chief District Public Defenders and Administrative Services.
• Perform duties assigned by the State Board and Minnesota Legislature.
