Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources seeks a State Mine Inspector for the Office of Mines and Minerals. Responsibilities include inspecting mines, enforcing safety regulations, investigating accidents, and responding to emergencies. We welcome applicants interested in joining this dedicated team.

Essential Functions
  • Perform technical inspections of mines and facilities.
  • Enforce safety regulations and collaborate with regulatory agencies.
  • Review and evaluate mine activity records.
  • Investigate accidents and conduct safety research.
  • Assist with training courses for mine industry employees.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 30 years of age.
  • Ten years of underground mining experience, including two in Illinois.
  • Valid Illinois State Mine Inspector and Mine Manager certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the Coal Mining Act, mining operations, and safety hazards.
  • Experience with mine ventilation, rescue, and geology related to Illinois minerals.
Conditions of Employment

Applicants must meet conditions including background checks, valid driver’s license, ability to travel and perform physical labor, and be on-call for emergencies. They must also comply with ethics and revolving door restrictions, including filing Statements of Economic Interest.
