Job summary

DPS-Office of State Fire Marshal in Baton Rouge, LA, seeks a State Fire Marshal Captain to oversee analytics and investigations within the Fire Investigation Unit (FIU). The role requires leading complex inspections, providing expert testimony, and coordinating rule revisions with training responsibilities.

The appointment is promotional for permanent employees, with a Monday–Friday schedule from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and compensation based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • Six years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field.
  • Associate’s degree with requisite experience in criminal justice, fire investigations, or related fields.
  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, fire service, construction, architecture, or engineering with four years in related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree with three years in related fields in criminal justice, arson/fire investigations, or related areas.
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, fire service, construction, architecture, occupational safety, or engineering with two years in related field.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Analytics. Incumbent must be proficient in software the agency uses for investigations, including Cell Hawk and cell phone analysis and Lexus Nexis.
  • May serve as an assistant to a supervisor or manager by performing administrative functions.
  • May serve as lead worker, trainer, or mentor over lower-level Deputies.
  • May conduct the most complex inspections and investigations requiring special certifications.
  • May serve as subject matter expert to District Attorneys, Attorney General, United States Attorney, and the insurance industry; provide testimony in court as needed.
  • May assist in coordinating the revision of agency rules, regulations, and procedures to meet required changes; may provide training or conduct presentations on such changes.
  • May perform grant management tasks and submit related reports.

Education

Six years of criminal justice/arson/fire investigations or inspections, or related fields
Associate’s degree + five years experience in related field
Associate’s degree in criminal justice, fire service, construction, architecture, or engineering + four years in related field
Bachelor’s degree + three years in related field
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, fire service, construction, architecture, occupational safety, or engineering + two years in related field

Job description

Mission Statement of the Office of State Fire Marshal: To uphold the law and provide for the protection of life and property from the hazards of fire or explosion, to ensure the safety of our citizens in the constructed environment, to provide equal access to disabled individuals, and to promote the efficient use of energy in commercial buildings.

This posting may be used to fill a vacancy for the State Fire Marshal’s office as a State Fire Marshal Captain. This position will be in EBR, located in the Fire Investigation Unit (FIU).

All qualifying options will also require an approved certification at the time of appointment (hire) or promotion:

  • Six years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • An associate’s degree in any field plus five years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • An associate’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a construction field, architecture, or an engineering field plus four years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in any field plus three years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in a criminal justice field, a fire service field, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field plus two years of experience in a criminal justice field, arson/criminal/fire investigations or inspections, a fire service field, building codes enforcement, a building construction field, architecture, occupational safety, or an engineering field.

  • May serve as an assistant to a supervisor or manager by performing administrative functions.
  • May serve as lead worker, trainer, or mentor over lower-level Deputies.
  • May conduct the most complex inspections and investigations requiring special certifications.
  • May serve as subject matter expert to District Attorneys, Attorney General, United States Attorney, and the insurance industry; provides testimony in court as needed.
  • May assist in coordinating the revision of agency rules, regulations, and procedures to meet required changes; may provide training or conduct presentations on such changes.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Promotional This vacancy is a PROMOTIONAL opportunity for permanent employees of the Office of State Fire Marshal only.

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
