Job summary

The UVA Division for Community Engagement and Equal Opportunity collaborates with Starr Hill Pathways to place AmeriCorps members as Student Success Coaches in Charlottesville area schools. Members will support youth development through a near-peer model within Virginia's Youth Mental Health Corps.

Participants receive a $10,608 living allowance and are eligible for a Segal Education Award upon completion. They will complete required trainings and certifications while gaining valuable networking

Qualifications

• Be between 18 and 24 years old and a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
• Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Pass a full background check including FBI fingerprint-based check.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned caseload of Starr Hill Pathways (SHP) students.
• Meet weekly with assigned students and quarterly with families.
• Provide Starr Support Series sessions on education and youth development topics.
• Obtain required Behavioral Health certifications during the term.

Overview

The Center for Community Partnerships is partnering with the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) in Danville, Virginia, to bring AmeriCorps' Youth Mental Health Corps model to Starr Hill Pathways. The CCP will recruit and supervise AmeriCorps members, who will be hired by IALR for their service term.

Starr Hill Pathways (SHP) is a middle school-to-college pipeline program for low-income and prospective first-generation college-going youth in Charlottesville and Albemarle County Public Schools.

AmeriCorps members support youth development as part of Virginia's Youth Mental Health Corps (YMHC), which uses a near-peer model to engage young adults in local AmeriCorps service to support youth.

Corps volunteers will complete certifications and credentials to prepare them for careers in behavioral health while creating expanded mental health services for youth. Members will serve in local middle and high schools as Student Success Coaches and Success Coach Coordinators, ensuring youth receive the academic and social-emotional support they need. Student Success Coaching combines academic, executive function, and social-emotional support in a coordinated program that serves the whole child.

Responsibilities

• Manage an assigned caseload of SHP students.
• Meet weekly with assigned students.
• Meet quarterly with students' families/caretakers.
• Follow SHP guidelines during coaching and family engagement sessions.
• Provide and/or develop Starr Support Series sessions focused on educational and youth development topics, including college and career readiness.
• Attain Behavioral Health Technician Assistant, Behavioral Health Technician, or Qualified Mental Health Trainee certification.
• Attain Youth Mental Health First Aid certification.
• Complete required trainings within the first two weeks, including:
• VDSS Mandated Reporter
• VDSS Digital Safety & Connection
• VDOE Mental Health Is Health
  

Requirements

Applicants must be between 18 and 24 years of age and:

• Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
• Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Not have served more than the allowable number of previous AmeriCorps terms.
• Have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
• Pass a full background check, including:
• Sex offender registry check
• State criminal history check
• FBI fingerprint-based check
• Complete and submit accurate and timely AmeriCorps service-hour documentation.
• Complete a final performance evaluation for successful completion of service.
