Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker’s Leadership Development Program – Software Engineering for Motor Control in Towson, MD or New Britain, CT offers three 8‑month rotations across Engineering, Product Management and Operations. You will design embedded firmware for power tools, work with ARM microcontrollers, and translate customer needs into software specifications.

You’ll join a cross‑functional team, gain hands‑on experience in verification, testing, and documentation, and contribute to cost,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering
• Experience with ARM architectures preferred; familiarity with assembly language is a plus
• Understanding of embedded concepts including RTOS and real‑time processing
• Familiarity with battery powered systems and motor control techniques is a plus

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electronic firmware and specifications for power tools including brushless DC motor controls, Li‑Ion battery management systems and battery chargers.
• Implement and validate electronic designs through software development, test and simulation.
• Develop software verification and validation procedures using unit and integration tests.
• Provide leadership in achieving cost, performance and quality objectives of all related electronic systems, components and sub‑assemblies.
• Develop solutions for electronic systems related issues as an integral member of a larger team.
• Maintain appropriate documentation for work performed.
• Translate customer requirements into software specifications.
• Embrace cross functional team work.

The Job

As a part of the SLP program, you’ll be part of our Engineering team. You’ll get to:

• Design and develop electronic firmware and specifications for power tools including brushless DC motor controls, Li‑Ion battery management systems and battery chargers.
• Implement and validate electronic designs through software development, test and simulation.
• Develop software verification and validation procedures using unit and integration tests.
• Provide leadership in achieving cost, performance and quality objectives of all related electronic systems, components and sub‑assemblies.

The Person

You love to learn, grow, and be acknowledged for your valuable contributions. You’re not intimidated by innovation. You also have Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering from an accredited computer or electrical engineering college. Knowledge in developing embedded 8bit/16bit/32bit microcontrollers in C.

Experience with ARM architectures preferred, experience with assembly language a plus. Understanding of common microcontroller peripherals such as timers, GPIO, watchdog, ADC, UART, DMA. Strong understanding of embedded concepts, including real‑time processing, process scheduling, cooperative multitasking, interrupted processing, race conditions, RTOS. Familiarity with closed loop control and feedback systems, lithium ion battery powered systems and common motor control techniques including sensored and sensorless trapezoidal control is a plus. Familiar with software development processes and control (static analysis, distributed version control, unit testing, bug tracking). Experience with debugging, either in‑circuit debugger or by other means. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship (H1B, OPT/CPT, TN etc).

The Details

Must be willing to rotate work assignments, projects, and teams every 8 months throughout the program. Relocation for a minimum of one rotation may be required; relocation assistance is available. This hybrid role will begin in either New Britain, CT or Towson, MD.

Salary

The Salary range for this position is $60,000.00 - $96,600.00. The salary offered within the range may vary depending on multiple factors including job level, geographic location, job‑related knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience and in compliance with local wage requirements. The successful candidate may be eligible for annual merit increases.
