Standby Driver

$25.00/hour - Part-Time - AM Standby

Monday-Friday, 5:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m.

Position Summary

LYNC Transportation Services is seeking a dependable, professional Standby Driver to provide immediate morning route coverage when unexpected driver call-outs, late arrivals, route disruptions, or other urgent transportation needs occur. This is a dedicated standby position. The primary responsibility is to remain ready and available for immediate deployment during the scheduled standby window.

Schedule
  • Part-time, school-year schedule, Monday through Friday on scheduled operating days.
  • Regular standby hours: 5:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m.
  • The employee must report on time and remain available for immediate assignment throughout the full standby window.
  • If assigned to a route, the employee is expected to complete the assignment even when the route extends beyond 8:00 a.m. All time worked will be paid in accordance with applicable wage and hour requirements and Company policy.
  • Additional hours or assignments may be offered separately based on business needs, but they are not part of the regular Standby Driver schedule.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Report and be ready for immediate deployment at the start of the scheduled standby shift.
  • Provide emergency or short-notice route coverage for unexpected driver absences, late arrivals, service disruptions, or other urgent transportation needs.
  • Safely transport students and other authorized passengers on assigned routes and schedules.
  • Follow all assigned route instructions, passenger requirements, safety procedures, and Company transportation policies.
  • Assist students with boarding, exiting, seating, and securement as needed.
  • Complete required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Communicate route status, delays, incidents, emergencies, and vehicle concerns to the appropriate transportation team member.
  • Use Company-issued technology and transportation systems as required to complete assigned routes and required documentation.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and ready Company vehicle when assigned.
  • Remain available for reassignment during the standby period when an initial assignment ends before 8:00 a.m.
  • Complete limited transportation-readiness duties when not deployed, such as confirming vehicle readiness, required equipment, and other directly related standby tasks.
Standby Availability Expectations

The effectiveness of this position depends on reliable early-morning availability. The Standby Driver must be prepared to accept and begin an assignment immediately when directed. Because the role exists specifically to provide emergency coverage, punctuality, attendance, responsiveness, flexibility, and reliability are essential job requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must meet Company age and vehicle insurance eligibility requirements.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimum three (3) years of licensed driving experience.
  • Driving record that meets Company and insurance requirements.
  • Reliable transportation to report for the 5:00 a.m. start time.
  • Ability to safely operate Company passenger vehicles assigned to the role.
  • Ability to effectively use Company-issued technology and electronic systems.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, flexibility, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to learn and safely cover multiple routes and service areas as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience transporting students or passengers, operating passenger vans, or providing school transportation services.
  • Familiarity with Philadelphia and surrounding service areas.
  • Experience working in a relief, substitute, on-call, or standby driving capacity.
Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion and continued maintenance of all applicable driver credentialing, background, safety, training, motor vehicle, and pre-employment requirements established by law, contract, insurance, or Company policy.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to safely operate a passenger vehicle for extended periods when deployed.
  • Ability to enter and exit Company vehicles repeatedly during assigned routes.
  • Ability to assist students with boarding, exiting, seating, and securement as required.
  • Ability to perform vehicle inspections and respond appropriately during emergency situations.
Compensation

The Standby Driver position is paid at $25.00 per hour for all compensable hours worked. The regular standby schedule is three (3) hours per scheduled day, from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. When deployed to an assignment that extends beyond the scheduled standby period, the employee remains on the clock through completion of the assigned work, subject to applicable Company timekeeping and wage-and-hour policies.
