The Atlantic seeks an ambitious writer for The Daily newsletter to drive conversation on news of the day with original analysis and reporting anchoring two or three editions weekly. Based in DC or NYC, you will coordinate with the newsletter editor and other writers to plan coverage.

Candidates should have 7+ years covering the news as a writer or reporter, stylish prose, incisive analysis, and a deep interest in newsletters.

The Atlantic is seeking an ambitious, curious, and ideas-obsessed writer for our flagship newsletter, The Daily. This writer will be responsible for driving the conversation on news of the day with original pieces of analysis and reporting that will anchor two or three editions of the newsletter each week. This writer will be deeply engaged with a wide-range of contemporary issues and events shaping life in the U.S. and abroad, even as they cultivate their own specific interests and proven areas of expertise within the newsletter. This role requires an original thinker with a keen interest in advancing The Atlantic’s founding motto of being “of no party or clique.” The Daily reaches hundreds of thousands of readers every day, and helps them contextualize what is happening through the magazine’s lens. The right candidate will be a writer with the authority to take on a variety of complex topics, and the humility and open-mindedness to appreciate a variety of viewpoints. Core to this role is the ability to quickly find fresh approaches and ideas-driven frameworks for the news of the day, bringing the Daily beyond a straightforward news update and helping it stand out in the reader’s inbox. This writer will coordinate with the newsletter editor and other writers to plan Daily coverage. News judgment, curiosity, and ability to cut to the heart of complex issues with impeccably reasoned ideas and lucid, persuasive writing, turned around on tight deadlines, will be central to the newsletter’s success.

Salary minimum: $150,000; salary maximum: $225,000.

This position is based in Washington, D.C. or New York City
