Job Summary

Under direction of the Associate Dean, serves as the Staff Veterinarian for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) graduate degree program. Works with the Gourley Leadership Team to create and implement policy for the unit. Oversees the use of live animals in the DVM program, the development of models used in DVM teaching, and compliance to protocols regarding animals used in teaching. Oversees treatment and maintenance of the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) colony animals (dogs and cats); and, provides emergency care as needed for all animals brought to GCTC until referral is made to the Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Mentors DVM students who work up, diagnose, treat, prepare for and perform various surgical procedures, anesthetize, operate, recover, and monitor postoperative progress and analgesic needs of cats and dogs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Current DVM licensure in the State of California.
  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a veterinarian in a university or private practice setting.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of veterinary medicine as it applies to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including surgery.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to effectively communicate and interact in a constructive manner with a variety of faculty, staff and students, as well as people from the community.
  • Excellent teaching and communication skills to provide constructive feedback to technicians and students regarding compliance with policies and procedures and the importance of documentation and record keeping.
  • Proven ability to accept responsibility and work independently and professionally to provide high quality service to all constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory or management experience, preferably in a clinical setting.
  • Experience with instruction, mentoring, providing feedback, and setting a positive environment for learning.

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing the use of animals in teaching.

Housed within the SVM Dean's Office, the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) graduate program is the largest graduate program at UC Davis with an annual enrollment of 600 professional students. The program consistently ranks the best in the country for veterinary science. Activities in the GCTC are supported by an annual, operational budget of $400,000, 14 staff members, and 20-25 student employees.

Work on call during evening hours, weekends, and holidays. Work various hours on short notice (including holiday shifts). Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals necessary for an animal hospital environment. May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff. Work in high traffic areas with noise from animals and people. Work in other related areas on an as needed basis. Work with animal cadavers and in animal shelter environments.
